i think i figured it out, its the utter lack of shame. most people would be ashamed to sound like mick but he is totally comfortable with it. there is a self awareness, there is some embarassment, he knows there is a gaping void where a singers voice should be, but there is no shame about it, which is why his vocals are often quite ugly and ungainly, he doesnt try to hide it in any way. instead there is joy and confidence, which is maybe what the stones are all about.
