Emojis and memes vs actual communication with words

Memes is short for allaboutmememe? such an idle way to communicate? at least that's how i feel when i go for an emoji, can't quite get it into words and an approximation will be ok, or was that even what i meant? perhaps the emoji hijacked my message o_O

or perhaps memes are a futuristic language for expressing the cyborg zeitgeist in ways that mere words can't capture?

this thread could fit in most of dissensus' categories - clearly a matter of core concern

The latter... Mechanical limbs....

I find communicating online feels like attaining several extra spider like limbs, like Dr. Octopus or the Boiler Geezer in Spirited Away. You've got words but you're also able to pull in images, video, audio and all sorts to make up for the lack of body language and tone of voice. It's like your mouth sealing itself shut as a bunch of antennas and tendrils sprout from your head.

spider like limbs, tentacles and antennas. Something gets sucked in or rendered obsolete and several mechanical/digital ones come sprouting and flailing out the other side...

memes are funny and all but now that they've seeped into mainstream culture, they've inspired so much sophisticated insinuating and creeping and lurking and dodging and shuffling and pussyfooting. Pretty sick of it.

people saying 'boomer' in political debates, what is that? what are you really appealing to there? some kind of dry, jittery ethos has been amplified that is ultimately completely vapid.

Did emojis, as we use them, develop from our usage of punctuational/alphabetical characters in a manner that doesn't align with their function? :) and whatnot, perhaps indicative of how the force behind a linguistic evolution can reappropriate its own symbols?

I thought it was short for memetic, but I don't quite understand why.

Something i noticed is that you cant do an old fashioned smiley now, ie colon for the eyes, hyphen for the nose, closing bracket for the mouth. If i type that combo of characters, it turns it into an emoji. So i have to do this : - )

I find the yellow emoji a bit nauseating, but i did use the old version a bit.

Why did they change it?
