Similar vibe to Arthur jafa in a sense, piling his way back thru art history and working out a way to keep it fresh.

Kerry james marshall talks about all the different tones of black, you think it's just a single thing but there's a few different ones right out the pack eg carbon black, ivory black, others.

And his innovation in the 80s was to further push the black tones by adding burnt umber and prussian blues to them, to give him more range to do a lot of 'black on black' pieces eg

Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me if he's referencing it. The title (portrait of the artist as a shadow of his former self) is presumably a nod to both Joyce and thd surrealists
