been exposed to a load of what i am going to term 'netflix films' recently (ie my girlfriend puts them on based on what her mates have reccomended). things like bodies bodies bodies and some film about sex work that's based on a twitter exchange. there's definitely something new going on, i see films all the time now that do new things (thematically and aesthetically) that i haven't seen before.

zola was a great film, yes. lot of dicks in modern tv/films. way more than ever before. also, a lot of larger dicks than youd tend to see before, like when people would see harvey keitel and lol a bit at his flaccid cock, but now, prosthetics or bigger cocks are demanded (it seems). what are the films about people pissing or urine filled toilet bowls? sounds like my kind of thing.

there is a weird sort of line between stuff like the barbie film, sha ek, skibidee toilet and that twitter film about sex work - which i've googled and it's called zola.

this zola one had a bit of two girls wiping themselves in adjacent cubicles. the pissing one was a series i think actually not a film, we watched it the other day, something about a couple doing real estate in a town in the south. there was a shot in that where suddenly you have a close up of a pissing dick and then you pan up the guys body to his face.
there's loads on pornhub as well try that

disposable vapes have a similar aesthetic sensibility to some of these as well. the neon colours and the curvey shapes. also the garish combination of colours that 'shouldn't' go together

pissing vids on p0rnhub are ok but i like to see pissing shot with proper cinematography, good lighting, a cool aesthetic.

i liked dogtooth but seem to remember thinking theres something a bit remorseless about it.
which sort of holds true for his other films. im not sure exactly what it is, but he sort of finds a vibe/mood/idea and then just burrows into it without much ebb and flow as if he thinks hes being a true artist by doing this. he has great concepts but not sure hes a great storyteller?
i liked the favourite the most of all his films (i want to rewatch it actually), and then this one too just cos of the performances, set design, dialogue (this might be the best/funniest/most lovable thing about it), and the humour etc. killing of a sacred deer was a bit try hard, the lobster had a great concept but it felt a bit thin as a treatment of that idea, plus i found it annoying that it had no real sense of place about it.

saw something called onlookers at metrograph in dimes square last night. i don't know the name of the style of film, but it's one of those ones where there's no dialogue, no story, nothing happens, just a series of static camera shots that let you watch the world go by. i really like that kind of thing. this one was 'about' tourism in laos. which i did about 20 years ago and it bought back a lot of memories. was surprising to see that the same things that i did (getting smashed tubing) are still going on without much of a chance. beyond the personal nostalgia, the best thing the film focused on was people on their phones taking photos. she really captured that thing i think, everyone showing up in a place and getting their selfies.
the filmmaker did a q&a after. she said she'd been to laos for two trips, totalling about a month between the two of them. she's an academic of some kind at rutgers. the lack of familiarity of the place really shone through in the film i think. it had that same feel of being a slightly bemused tourist, an uncomprehending outside perspective on a distant land. it was nice and wholesome watching her speak and thank her mum and her students that had shown up to watch the film. i've said a thousand times on here it is ludicrous how dominant this kind of demographic is in cultural production in the US (or at least the parts of it that i gravitate to). a middle class academic basically. they're everywhere.

Disagree with this, but it did hit me in the gut, I guess that's where it lives or dies. There were some slightly pretentious feeling bits but overall thought it was great.
