What I like about film noir scores, none in particular, but having watched a documentary it mentioned a particular cue that escaped me, is that you can play off key, so any chord you want. I'm not a music theorist though F sharp minor sounds good and so does a Major bassline then you have a few Minor chords in the scale to choose from.

I also like typing stuff like this into Google and coming up with the most 'mystic' chord I can find. I think with my level of hearing, once you get so extended, they start to sound similar.
