Lucky Jacques Law's recently gotten into Deconstruction.

That's right. It's Arsene at Monaco. One of the great continental thinkers. He used to smoke on the bench back then.

Give how much I like Baudrillard, I was worried I might be too susceptible to French bullshit, but Derrida immediately struck me as a waffler. He seems likeable enough as a person, but he wasn't saying anything, really. It was more interesting when he was joking about not having read most of his library and talking about his sister than when they tried to prod him into philosophising.

I'll have to read some of the books before making a proper judgement, but my gut reaction's negative.

barty kept going on yesterday about how if youre really clever you dont read books. readiong and trying hard is a striving, second class brain attitude. i agree with with him on that.

It'll shock you to learn I've actually never read anything by him... Unless perhaps a short excerpt printed out by a lecturer

Maybe if I was paid a decent salary to read Derrida as my full time job I'd get around to reading him

MAYBE

There's a bit in the film where they ask him to talk about love and he's like, well, ask me a question about love, don't just say love in general, so they ask him questions and he keeps going no, no, i can't possibly answer that.

Years of practicing adultery taught him everything he knew.

That's probably the key to Continental philosophy.

This is why all he can talk about is porn.

Strongly suspect deconstructionism etc is invented by Frenchmen to excuse their fiendish sexual behaviour

I was assigned his essay “Plato’s Pharmacy” in college and felt really dumb trying to make heads or tails of it. Even the driest stuff we read in that class like Husserl or the Tractatus I devoured up with glee, but from him I was only able to pick up a hyper-sophisticated fetish for the written word which, again, I didn’t and don’t really understand. I should try again, tell me where to @Corpsey or anyone else
