This is probably a few years late, but is there any mystery / story to why Goldfrapp changed sound so much between their first and second albums?
First album's got overtones of soundtrack stuff by Morricone (whistling solos, ffs!) and John Barry, up til then all the stuff Alison sang on seemed similarly mellow (Tricky, Orbital, Plaid, some track by someone I can't recall on Pussyfoot).
Then it was all electroclash-ish stuff but with that sorta blues rock swagger. Latest seems to have cemented that. And 'Strict Machine' takes it's every gesture from 'I Feel Love', doesn't it? Just the gestures, but still...
I should qualify this by saying I'm not a big fan.. I liked her voice on the early tracks I mentioned, so checked out the Goldfrapp duo, but wasn't thaaaat impressed. So maybe there are missing links I don't know about.
