The minibus taxis were once important to the spread and distribution of Kwaito music. These are the most common form of public transport in the township areas, taking routes not served by buses or trains. At first each minibus station looks like total chaos, with no signs for destinations just people yelling and loud music. The whole operation is organized by locals, renting taxis by the day and running the routes the locals demand. The whole operation is not just competitive and market based but also clearly efficient.
In the competitive world of minibus taxis, with competition for fares and low profit margins, a good soundsystem can put one taxi above the others. The music videos often feature the same scene of people doing the same dance outside the minibus, and the gets repetitive after years of the same commute.
On the other side of South African society, many middle-class people who don't take a minibus cite the "loud music" as a determining factor.
