what radio stations did you lot used to listen to? my favourite for this era was pulse 90.6/ nicky bl;ackmarket used to have a show. he was pertty funny. he would do things like make bird noises into the mic and pretend a canary was trapped in the studio.

later i switched to weekend rush as it got a bit more junglely. kool was a bit weak when it first kicked off (who remembers mc stingray?!) but soon became the heavyweight champ and then everyone had to listen to them.

sometimes
i had a few tapes by a bloke called dj charlie something on weekend rush, he died but i remember the tapes being total jungle techno, stuff like radio babylon, bits of shut up and dance, strange abstract dance bits and stuff with raggary vocals etc it was lush, he mixed tracks quicker than anyone i'd experienced track into track..

its still going that station..

i'm joking
www.hardcorewillneverdie.com is really good for live mixes.

Do a search for Top Buzz at Fantazia NYE 91/92. It is a classic set.

And.... If Mr. Bassnation would put his Hardcore Rewind sets back online you'd have a proper crash course in 91-92 business. (;) *nudge nudge* Marc)

Also, I did these darkside posts and a few others a couple of years ago...

Probably the most magical moment for me is 1993 darkside, when rave has fully imploded but jungle proper has yet to be parsed out. Polyglot mayhem and on-the-spot invention. Look for AWOL @ Paradise sets - Kenny Ken, Randall, GQ, etc.

Randall & Kenny Ken w/ GQ and Fats, Winter 1993 http://www.themixingbowl.org/topics.php?action=viewtopic&topicid=33108 (one of the best recordings of anything ever, imo)

Just refresh the sign-up page for a few minutes and you can usually get in.

Yeah, I got them on Audiogalaxy too!! Took me a while to work out he was bassnation. Great mixes, cheers fella.

hey thanks everyone - its a pleasure!

i really miss audiogalaxy, especially for old skool. sounds like we were all members of the old skool group there. i used to leave my client running all day, and come home to find members had sent me a vast array of mind-melting hardcore. incredible music that was also very rare - ripped straight from members vinyl just for the group. soulseek doesn't even come close really. like all good things, it was never going to last, and sure enough they got busted.

i think i picked up the vast bulk of my mp3 music collection there - certainly in terms of vintage dance music - although i also used my own records for the mixes.

and as matt points out, this was in the pre-blog days - which although was only really five years ago, now its hard to imagine a world without blogs.

as regards the track listings, they were lost long ago unfortunately - but I think I know most of the tunes by name and I could probably piece together something - will give it a go.

heres the first installment. i won't put the fourth up because its a bit shit compared to the others.

and heres something else i used to host, a darkcore mix by dj twist (iain watson of uk-dance.org)

Twist had the most fantastic website up for a short period of time. He had rips of tons of primo labels - I got most early Moving Shadows and Reinforced, along with various Whitehouse, Production House and more off there before he took them down. I also bought a couple of mint Philly Blunts (Dillinja - 'Sky' oh man what a tune) off him too. Great guy. Wonder what he's up to now?

THanks for the links Bassnation, some ace stuff on those mixes:)

Could anyone who was around at the time be bothered to provide [or point me in the direction] a brief overview of the transition from hardcore to jungle and what tracks/artists/drugs/cities etc were particularly influential in the shift? I did read Generation Ecstacy 3 or 4 years back but my memory of its poor and i'm too skint to buy another and too impatient to wait for the library to order a copy in.

Been listening to a few randall mixes from 93 and theres quite a contrast between the more obviously ecstacy geared tracks and the darker more rythmic and restrained affairs. Were the more upbeat tracks frowned upon or was the scene open to such diversity?

[apologies if this deserves its own thread or i've asked a daft question, theres no agenda behind it, just curiosty as someone born 10yrs too late to witness it first hand]

Just brilliant bassnation. MORE!

Need a reload on Woebot's Bleep N' Bass mix as well, not sure what I did with that mp3.
