yeah, 501s are a pretty unflattering cut. just wanted to point out they've been button fly forever.

i've gotten decent slim, inexpensive jeans at uniqlo. best jeans i ever had in my younger days were a few pairs from helmut lang, back when he ran the line and had men's clothes. a prefect fit, slim and straight but not too tight.

what jeans are out there today that aren't ridiculously expensive (ie, $60-70...or under $100, anyway)?

Darned cockwombles.
What's wrong with button fly (genuine question, I probably prefer it cos zips break...)? But it's true that they used to be rarer than Labour governments back when I was a boy.

Re cheap jeans, got some nice-ish ones for £20 yesterday, from a shop that buys in bulk and has a business model of selling lots at a (relatively) small profit per item. But as far as buying directly from high street shops for a sane price, I have no idea these days...

I've never had a zip break on a pair of jeans.

Buttons are basically slower and fiddlier to use and a totally unneccessary inconvenience.

I have.

Only if you're not used to doing up buttons, I guess. Seems a very marginal thing to me on the list of life's unnecessary inconveniences

Further to the above: any thoughts on where I could get a smallish silk / similar scarf to wear under a shirt like a day cravatte? Or would it be eaier to just get a rectangle of silk friom a haberdashers and hem it?

My logic sucks, I read that Tea set* as "There exists a set jeans of which Levis 501s are not a member"

*!!!!!!!!!!!

I was never any good at symbolic logic, give me proper algebra any day. It was intended to mean "there exists a set of jeans which are do not belong to the set, Levi 501s".

'Tea set', very good!

Third shop (maybe) on the left on Cheshire Street - the men's vintage shop - has a great supply of silk scarves, not too sure about cravattes. It's the best men's vintage shop at the moment in London, closely followed by the Vintage Showroom on Earlham Street. Both are very pricey but they know what they're doing, and why.

Cool, thanks. I've managed to convince myself that a cravat would be wrong with this particular get up, but like the idea in principle.

Other thing (and a ludicrously open-ended question): I've bought myself an off-white flat cap, for keeping the sun off my head at times when a big floppy sunhat isn't appropriate. It's good, and very versatile. But I'm sure there's some bit of a gangster film where someone wears something similar, and I have no idea what - the closest I can get is the brown caps that Michael and his bodyguards wear in Sicily in The Godfather. Any ideas?

Footwear question - I treated myself to some sweet creps today:

The bloke in the shop recommended spraying them with some sort of protective spray to make them last longer. Is this actually a thing, or just a blatant attempt to upsell some short of shite "product"?
