The guy who left that comment on the website lost his job, his residency permit and spent time on the streets - not least because it took 5 months for some lab results to come back. Obviously, until he was cleared they had make sure he didn't skip the country, but the rest of it sounds like very harsh treatment for a man who was eventually found innocent.

and you know this is true because...?

the vast preponderance of victims of sexual abuse/assault aren't women

that's an imponderable innit

in the usa there probably isn't such a large difference wrt rape in adolescents>adults thanks to the wonders of the gulag complex that ensures there are probably a similar numbers of rapes of both genders (some figures of 2 million + raped in carcera)

for childhood sexual abuse, which is far more common, i wouldn't imagine there was a huge difference between genders (almost none of which will ever be investigated)

alot of the stuff in this thread is needlessly inflammatory

I remember reading somewhere - it was probably Dworkin - that one of the major problems women face in talking about rape is that men will immediately find a position from which to say that men are victimised too. I wish I could find it now, but I'm off to make a mutton biryiani and read queer theory about killing everything, in a Lacanian fashion.

I agree with tht. There are several interesting discussions in the making here, but you need to relax people.

tht, I don't know the child abuse stats, but I do know this much--even the boys who are raped are almost always raped by men, not women.

mms, i'd rather not talk about that.

Oh, so no woman would ever make a false accusation, but this guy MIGHT still be guilty even though he was acquitted by forensics after having been accused by a delusional schizophrenic?

Of course there's no garuantee, but he's been found innocent in the eyes of the law. I doubt he'd bother to write in to a news website about it if he were actually guilty. Then again, he could have made the whole story up for shits and giggles, for all I know.

it's just a message board. if you want to discount how many women suffer sexual violence, then you're probably going to have at least one person get inflamed at you (provided there's a single female who posts to it)

I never said false accusations didn't happen. I just don't think they're as likely as 80%, or even as likely as people wish they were.

If we're going to start quoting Dworkin we might as well abandon the pretence that we're having a balanced or civilised discussion.

To return to the original question, I've never been stalked (or a stalker), but a female friend of mine and my brother have both had a lot of trauma from mental exes.

Who's the woman who wrote a response to Dworkin about porn? It was so good. I think it was in New York Magazine. Dworkin thought porn's increasing availability would turn all men into rapists, but this woman points out that the opposite has happened--men have retreated more and more into fantasy and masturbatory sexuality and that they're not seeking out actual sex as much. She talks about ED and all of that. Maybe i can find it...

I can see why you might think that, I'm of the opinion that she was one of the greatest writers of the 20th century but I'm aware that I'm in a minority on that one. Thanks for a nice afternoon everyone! x

i've had plenty of unwanted and forceful attention both male and female in my time, not to a repeated stalking level though.
Also had several cases of aggressive girlfriends, i've always managed to remain calm though throughout , but one was really upset with me when she realized (when she came sober) that i had hurt her arm a little, trying to stop her punching me, which was rich.
My own feelings are that men and women both have a propensity for violence and uncontrollable rage.

lucky for men most of them can easily overpower a woman even in the most uncontrollably violent rage

yes and one of the paradoxes of testosterone is that in drunken women the levels rise by 50% and in men drop by 50% under the same circumstances.

really? 50% seems pretty drastic. i don't much like alcohol, definitely don't like having drunken sex more than any other time. probably less.

i see what the point is in the BBC article that makes the 50% claims--they're trying to make a direct connection between violence and testosterone levels. actually it's a lot more complex than that. testosterone as an androgen is mostly responsible for elevated sex drive, i can't see it somehow suddenly making a female violent given the presence of other androgens. maybe temporarily horny. men aren't violent just because of testosterone, it's about social norms and all of that...
