1Xtra changes

At least they had the balls to keep Benji B.

It's all good and well for them to want to attract a new audience by having a (i presume) more mainstream line up, but one of the reasons that 1Xtra isnt doing so well is because hardly anyone has a DAB radio. Will Westwood & Trevor Nelson raise the station's profile to people who previously couldn't be bothered watching a black screen on their digibox TV? As they can still be heard on FM, I very much doubt it.

And I'm one of the few people who has a DAB!

I don't think if either of them had a choice, they would be doing shows on 1xtra. So I doubt it will be the huge ratings getter it might be intended to be.

so why then?

benji b is a badder man for real...I remember him getting two japanese yats in a rave when the line was over hench and it was like he didn't give a f***

the thing i find annoying about 1xtra is the presenters all seem to be really thick. in the case of target, cameo, etc i dont expect them to have much to say as theyre just specialist deejays, i just want them to play good fresh music and know the music well but with the daytime or breakfast deejays, theyre just bland all over. and THICK. quite STUPID almost. or is that unkind to say? cant they get someone who is a bit intelligent and doesnt seriously entertain polls about whether will smith is a legend (heard this yesterday)? i mean FFS i like will smith as much as anyone but a LEGEND?!

i agree with tactics, that it would be nice if they had some more news stuff, some more probing docus, stuff about current issues (i know they do some stuff - theres a lot of docus on the website, but a lot of it that isnt about the music seems a bit neither here nor there, or is that just me being a bit harsh?) more that was DONE WELL.

i think theyre too caught up between wanting to be 'acessible' and mainstream but still be about 'black music'. i also dont get why they dont do more for older black music. why is that only left to fucking radio 2 or whoever? (i know theyre meant to be NEW black music but still...) if radio 2 and 4 can do docus about soul etc in an informative serious way, that should be on 1xtra too, esp as its meant to be all about black music.

i wonder what choice fm is like these days - i havent heard that for ages.

it means benji b is a man worthy of our respect, particularly as on this one occasion he managed to get two japanese girls into a club when the line was extremely long.

been listening to 1x more lately. zena and nelson have grown on me but i still think theyre not that strong as breakfast deejays. they need to find someone entertaining. gina yashere or someone, i dunno. the daytime deejays are still too much of a blur though, all thickos who shouldnt be on during the daytime as they have no personality really. except rampage that is.

im not saying i think gina yashere is very funny but have you HEARD zena and trevor? ive a lot of respect for trevor as an R&B deejay but as a breakfast presenter, that show isnt too great.

So I've been getting around to listening to all the 1xtra shows at work...

Any tips?

Target's seemed a bit cheesy (I don't remeber a single straight grime beat, all funky, bassline etc with some grime vocals), MA1 was quite good but the funky beat gets a bit repetitive after an hour or two. Robbo Ranx's voice is really irritating, sounds like he is putting on a fake accent a bit, a la Westwood. Westwood himself is so likeable and hilarious despite being such an idiot, he's brilliant, it's like comedy and grime in a single show.

Great passing the day listening to all this music though!
