Edit: should be in the drugs thread, but hey ho, posted it now -

I'd say this goes for me, too. Experiences on ecstasy aren't as totally far-out as those on mushrooms or acid, but I've found they've stayed with me as a long-term thing to a much greater degree.

And who was it mentioned MDA? I think I had that in some pills once, it was like a stupidly strong, speedy and much trippier version of normal pills, would be great to get some more but I guess it usually just turns up as a contaminant in 'ecstasy' than as a drug in its own right.

I did... that was xmas day 2002 sorted. To be honest E as a whole is utterly and totally see-through as an experience, unless yr just utterly fucked in which case it makes little difference...

E is fraud of a drug - it totally removes your critical faculties and gives the impression that you are having the best time of your life, without actually changing your perception of the world at all - I gave up going clubbing with E-heads because usually the night would be probably one of the worst of the week interms of music, crowd, dj, etc, but they would be banging on about for the rest of the week as the best night ever, every week, and repeat until bored.

The quality has also has got so bad that you have take several to get anyting - its like a model of consumer society in drug form, constantly diluted and cheaper but ultimately a pale shadow of its former self.

you aren't going to the right places, listening to the right music or going to the right dealers then mate, simple as that.

I would say two things: a) you need to get better pills and b) more importantly, you need to get better clubbing friends. Even when I'm trashed, I like to retain the ability to say "this is shit" if it is infact shit.
Of course, I try to avoid this situation by going to good clubs in the first place.

Are your mates are so far gone they go to trance or hard house nights?

I once went (not out of choice) to see a trance DJ sober at Cream. It was not only terrible, but incomprehensible by any normal model of enjoyment.

"you aren't going to the right places, listening to the right music or going to the right dealers then mate, simple as that."

This was back in the early to mid 90's - I'm that old now I wouldn't even think of taking an E anyway.

I have a few "younger friends" who are coming to the same conclusions I did when I did back then - perhaps its an age/taste thing, but a as "drug" it never appealed to me, so lets not get into a bunfight on who has the harder drugs and when - that would be really sad.

Sex on it was fun though, needed some planning to get a whole nights enjoyment out of it, but I can truely say I enjoyed it better when I didn't go out.

Cream - shite then and now - was good for the first year, shite after that, period.

I've never been, but the whole 'superclub', arena-DJ thing is pretty much the antithesis of what I like about clubbing.

we must have very different tastes then rob because i used to go to cream from 1994-95 onwards and i can tell you categorically it was brilliant back then. i've seen miss djax, cajmere, justin robertson, carl cox, dj pierre and many other fantastic house and techno djs play there. some of the best times of my life without a shadow of a doubt. in fact i'm sure stelfox will back me up on this as he was also going round then and has said similar things. this was full-on the monthly night, although i also went to some of the regular sat night things too. the exact point where it went shit was when they started putting on wankers like oakenfold and stopping the quality house and techno. but that wasn't until much, much later.

also used to go to the quadrant before cream.

i'm 37 btw, and started raving in 1990 so possibly even more burnt out than you. and doing it is no longer the same for me cos presumably my brain has changed (worryingly) but i remember what it was like and i'm not about to go all revisionist on dissensus's collective ass. if thats how you feel, thats how you feel.

these days i'm more likely to drop an e at a reggae soundsystem and shock out to the bass than i am at a rave.

Cream shut down as a regular night in Liverpool 'cause it was full of scally nutters off their head on coke and Stella. Loads of aggro, nearly as bad as the 051, proper "lairy".

Chibuku, Bugged Out and Voodoo (RIP), great nights. Ladytron's club Evol was quite good fun before it turned into a generic indie night.

i went to both voodoo and bugged out, but i think evol was after my time in liverpool. i went back to sankeys soap (the old home of bugged out) in manchester recently. my mate got turned away for having the temerity to wear a checked shirt, have a bald head and be tall, the wankers. if security are behaving in such an arbitary manner outside the venue then i don't really want to go inside.

I think we are more on the same page than not actually. Justin Robertson and Carl Cox were probably 2 of the best DJ's in the period (went regularly to the Justin Robertson techno monthly in Manchester around that same period), but they were always relegated to the backroom if I'm not mistaken, and the main arena was strictly house of the oakenfold/seb fontaine variety and this slowly killed the vide towards the end of 96, so I ended up going to more specialist nights anyway. People seemed to go to Cream becasuse it was Cream, rather than the music it played - it was the place to be seen in Liverpool anyway, if you lived like that - I loved Liverpool, as a city the bars and clubs were great early to mid 90's. Perhaps I lost interest....

ok here's a better question:

comparing your own preference of men/women as sexual partners to mainstream (read western media) notions of "attractiveness", would you say they:

A. are identical
B. are similar but with exceptions
C. overlap somewhat
D. have nothing to do with eachother
E. are the exact opposite

i would say B for myself. daily conditioning since puberty is hard to shake. very embarrased about my pavolovian response to blondes for instance.

and i tend to be more interested in people that look different from myself... couples that look like brother and sister are so boring! and biologically the farthest away from in-breeding is optimal, giving your offspring better chances.

also related, what is the thing where 2 attractive people have the ugly children?? and vice versa, average looking people having gorgeous kids. is there a term for that?
