there are no accidents
Dear Jaie Miller:

The sometimes seemingly hopelessly fucked up situation in many parts of Africa is the result of the unfolding of very complex historical events which many non-Africans are either responsible or at least complicit, and it is not, in any way, shape, or form, any reason to not be proud to be African.

I am originally from China, have come into contact with many different cultures and people around the world, and i have nothing but massive, MASSIVE respect for African people and culture. I am constantly amazed by my African friends in many more ways than one; and right now i am living and breathing African music, from traditional to the stuff in this thread. if I am lucky i hope to go there soon, maybe even to live for a while.

chin up! you have a brother from a different mother here with nothing but love and respect for you and other Africans.

Dear Mister Sloane:

that Double M is so wonderful. effortless and elegant. those simple melodies so, so sweet...

to be honest i did not feel the Glen Lewis CD very much at all. it's really boring to my ears even as background music...

thanks for Dr Duda! i check it pronto!

DJ Cleo - Es'Khaleni

2004

The first in DJ Cleo's (so far) four part Es'Khaleni series. Cleo is South Africa's Dr Dre, Neptunes and Timbaland rolled into one. His work is essential, and a nice bloke to boot when I met him *clang*. He started off as a DJ for Ashifa Shabba's Club Y Show on YFM in 2000, which spawned a whole scene around it. There's a great essay on Y culture by Lara Allen here :?http://www.africanstudies.uct.ac.za/downloads/30_2allen_p82.zip(first
found off a comment by http://southafricanchoirgirl.blogspot.com/ on www.wayneandwax.com)

More details on him here :?http://djcleo.calabashmusic.com
(is intermittently down)

Did that last video of Gavin's remind anyone else of Laurent Garnier's "Flashback"?

And yeah, incredible dancing...

That last youtube clip is amazing! As you said, Gavin, some sick dance moves too.... When you're talkign about "most coked-out Dominican reggaeton", what artists do you mean? Sounds just up my street...I have a bachaton compilation, but maybe that's not what you're talking about...?

Lol, the most coked out shit I've heard is Colombian (go figure) -- check La Factoria and La Cripta. I guess the Dominican thing is wishful thinking -- going there for the weekend and hoping for some good shit.

that Mujava track is lovely... would drop perfectly in an wonky-pitch electro house set.

edit: with stuff like Frederico Franchi 'Cream' from mid 2006:

Marvellous Mavusana : Double M

This is more laid-back, urban kwaito with rapping in a great rasping brogue. He's rapping in I think Sotho but if anyone knows the language for sure I'd love to know, I still can't quite tell sometimes between Sotho, Khosa and Zulu (embarrassing). Mavusana also appears to have worked with DJ Mujava (see above). I love this album.
