Do Brits make the best breakfasts in the world?

i think the breakfasts you can get in montreal are the best, as they combine elements of british, american, and continental... which is to say you can get eggs, sausages, fried tomatoes, and croissants at the same place...

for british breakfasts, i like the beans... it's a good addition to eggs and meat...

of course, there is no discounting deep south breakfasts w/ the aforementioned steak n eggs, as well as grits, and biscuits and gravy...

then there is the mid atlantic favorite, scrapple... find it kinda gross myself...

damn is this thread ever making me hungry right now. and it's 8AM. girl always tells me she can't believe i can eat such a HUGE breakfast first thing in the morning but i always wake up with an appetite. for food and other things. like destruction.

canadian does sound good. i miss good ol' american breakfast a lot... never thought i would. just hashbrowns and omlette.

traditional Oaxacan breakfast is amazing as well. the beans is what reminded me of that. corn tortilla so soft, with eggs and beans and green sauce rolled up in it...

How soon do you get hungry after you wake up? About an hour for me. I know people who don't get hungry 'til around 1PM, I'd literally collapse before that without at least a bowl of cereal or toast or something.

When I know I'm gonna fill my face with a huge fry-up (generally Sun morning) I actually feel a bit like a kid at xmas and find myself walking to the newsagent at about 8am. The rest of the week, half a grapefruit, followed by a banana mid-morning, will do me till about 1 a lot of the tme. Others, I just have a bacon sarnie.

And the croissant, as a breakfast component or as a general snack, is surely one of the greatest contributions the French have given to the world.

We owe the croissant to the Austrians, not the French.

For me decent bacon is the key. I had 1/2 full English for lunch but here in Portugal you can't get decent bacon. It's a bit placcy and you just eat it for a bit of bacon flavour. Smoked Danish is IT.

Decent tea is impossible here too. It's like gnat's piss. Though people are disgusted when you say that you drink tea with milk. It's a slice of lemon for these lilly-livers.

Let's Talk About Ceps
I like the continental breakfast: one espresso and two Marlboro Reds

Nah, come on - it's gotta be untipped Gauloises, surely?

As far as fry-up components go, I'd say the traditional sausage-bacon-eggs formula can't really be bettered. Folks round here seem to like fried tomato, too, which is the one thing I can't handle - for me it's got to be a couple of big fat open-cap mushrooms fried in butter until reduced to about a tenth of their former volume. Plus crushed garlic, if I'm feeling 'continental'...

didn't they stop making gauloises in france cos no one was buying them? it was supposed to be a sign of the imminenet collapse of french civilization.

I don't normally eat anything until lunchtime unless I went out the night before and didn't have any dinner. I just don't normally feel hungy in the mornings, in fact I don't really feel like much at all in the mornings although I'm getting better. My first thought when the alarm goes off is normally "oh no" but now after a few minutes if I've had a fairly decent night's sleep I can be looking forward to sitting on the bus with the paper.

Where does one get a good breakfast in Montreal? I've never come across anywhere decent yet. Of course, the croissants and pastries can be great, but they don't really qualify as breakfast unless you eat about 5 of them. No sir, while I've had great lunches and a couple of the best dinners of my entire life there, breakfasts have always been rather a let-down. Far too many eggs benedicts for my liking. And while we're at it, whose stupid idea was eggs benedict anyway? Was it something to do with that bloke out of the A Team? Either way, eggs are quite eggy enough thank you without covering them in more egg. People have been conned into thinking that they're a posh indulgence, but really the whole concept is about as ridiculous as serving chips with a mashed potato sauce or a sandwich in which the filling is more bread.

Indeed! I'm actually ridiculous in the morning... I can't speak, eat, or remember anything until I've had a shower. It's just about all I can do to get it together enough to have a glass of milk and grunt monosyllabic responses to anything anyone might ask me before 9.30 :D

Does anyone else have quite weird semi-hallucinagenic experiences when you've just woken up briefly to go to the toilet or something, before going back to sleep again? I apparently conduct intelligable conversations with family and act fairly normally before going straight back to sleep and remembering nothing more than a vague haze.

I love breakfast but not at breakfast.

ah yes, "breakfast not breakfast". too cool for school! :)

it actually happens with frequency that I am woken up in the morning by hunger pangs. at like, 6:30 AM. and sometimes i get up and fix eggs and toast and then go back to bed. everyone who's ever seen me do this think I'm absolutely mad. :)

i like breakfast foods, but can just as easily eat dinner at 7AM. grilled trout with garlic potatoes? no problem! shwarma plate with lamb and humus and rice? bring it on!!!

i can actually eat a full british breakfast at about 10pm, which i can do in the morning, but for some reason it's much easier to eat in the evening

viktor, was it a sub-conscious ref to alan partridge to give your full english breakfast marks out of ten?

also, i've gotta say that, glutton (and now non-smoker) that i am, i have a lot of time for the black coffee and a fag breakfast. just the right combo of stimulants to get through a lot of dreary mornings in the office.

yes, me too. the number of times i used to have this conversation:

my mother: you didn't hang the washing out
dan: what?
my mother: this morning before i left for work i asked you to hang the washing out
dan: what?
my mother: you said it was fine, and you'd take care of it
dan: what?

I symphathise, and the worst is if I get woken up by a phone call and then go back to sleep. I'll remember the person calling me but have absolutely zero recollection of anything that was said.

once my girlfriend told me i got up and made a phone call at 4 AM and went back to sleep. she asked me about it in the morning and i had no idea what she was talking about. and then she went back to her place and got a message on her answer machine from me: unintelligible non-sense.

worst one that happened recently was waking up after a particularly heavy evening, going to the bathroom, putting my foot through the bin, going back to sleep, forgetting about it.

i still don't remember it, and it may not even have been me

also, it's all about the misc. forum :D
