My teacher was one of the top players in the UK. Which was good because I got good guidance, and bad because I didn't stand a chance of winning without a huge artificial advantage

I understand about the bad part. I got my teacher down to five stones, supposedly the equivalent of a rook start in chess — in other words I was a total patzer at Go.

Chap I used to work with, played tournaments in Japan so pretty good. The English Go world is pretty small I guess.

Five stones isn't bad is it, depending on the level of your opponent.

To be honest I haven't stuck at it because it's just so mind boggling, you end up getting like that guy in Pi, and also I couldn't find many other evenly matched beginners.
