^^ Nice one guys. It's interesting seeing the different tunes and styles a sample can turn up in. Might be turning into a bit of a sample-source geek, I can't deny it.
Danny Breaks was so good, I ought to have more of his tunes really

Some people might have already heard this but thought it would be worth posting as there seems to be quite a few Trace fans on this thread:
October 94. Big show.

Yeah I agree. I think the main problem is that it's now almost impossible to get away with releasing stuff with obvious uncleared samples, copyright is so tightly clamped down now. And getting clearance for a bunch of samples on every tune is obviously not going to be very appealing for most producers.

I thought things had gone the other way now because music sales especially niche musics are so low that it's really not worth sueing people over copyright anymore

yeah that's what I thought too, I didnt mean a really obvious Brandy/RnB sample, just vox samples in general?
say if you used a sample from an old sci-fi film - what are the chances of being prosecuted?

so I was listening to Gang Starr + I had one of those moments where you're going back to some classic early-mid 90s rap that you haven't listened to in like forever + you recognize the sample from some 1995 hardstep tune but you can't remember for the life of you which tune it is. (ok maybe I'm the only person who has those kinds of moments but I have them not too uncommonly)

anyway the line is from 'Just to Get a Rep'. it's the opener that goes "brothers are amused by other brothers reps/but the thing they know best is where the gun is kept". at first I thought it was Ed Rush but then I realized that I was thinking of 'Gangsta Hardstep' which samples a different Gang Starr tune (Lil Dap's verse from 'Speak Ya Clout'). I'm pretty sure it's either something from the Hype/Zinc/Pascal etc crew (circa the Ganja/Frontline Records era) or possibly a mid-late 90s Congo Natty tune under one of that guy's numerous aliases. or maybe just a different hardstep era No U-Turn tune that I'm failing to remember correctly.

anyway it's driving me a little nuts + I'm too lazy to go digging around youtube for an hour to figure it out. anyone name the tune?

also while I'm at here + on a kind of related topic here is resident No U-Turn badman/unsung hero DJ Gunshot repurposing the Chef + the beat of another Wu classic into a hard/ruff/dark yet simultaneously rolling banger inna finest 1995 style

<iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/NtiGT-t4ptg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

you probably remember Gunshot best for the Chaka Khan flipping smasher "Wheel Up"

ID help please.....

Anyone know the track that starts at 6:45 with the "twisted and evil" sample?

thanks, good look. I knew it was something way obvious + I'd be kicking myself when I found out what it actually was, + sure enough here I am kicking myself. I can never match droid or those kinds of serious reggae guys when it comes to obscure dancehall samples but I do know my 90s rap.

I particularly enjoy how he flipped Guru, who is actually preaching some cautionary wisdom to would be gangsters, into the requisite 1994 dark + ominous vibe.
