I listen to a lot of grime but when people ask me "what is grime?" I don't quite know how to answer. It's not easy to put into words (for me). But then I have never been good at explaining what "defines" a genre. Anyone else want to make an attempt?
So did the people who coined the phrase in UK Garage. "Grimey" beats was used to describe them tongue in cheek as being bassline driven but dirty and technically poor.
I believe Matt Lamont used it frequently when he was appearing on EZ's show and EZ would draw for the earlier "grime" tracks
yeah it was a negative term between EZ and Lamont, hence why a lot of what we now call grime don't seem to feel comfortable about it. still it's healthy as things have come a long way since "Flowers."
