Library Music

i guess i am missing the finer point here. it sounds like we are talking about the same thing? i imagine it is the same session musicians popping into the studio to record musical cues, somewhere down the line, it is appropriated for educational/instructional films, or like, commercials and whatnot. sorry i am maybe a bit dunderheaded.

anyhow, i just popped on another kirchin album "sounds of the industrial north" (trunk records)----half of it is from the "De Wolfe" musical library 10 inches. jimmy page plays on it. evan parker appears on "quantum", along with (iirc) Worlds Within Worlds/Charcoal Sketches.

more on "de wolfe" (from some liner notes for a "de wolfe comp": The De Wolfe Library (or Music De Wolfe) was started in 1909 by Meyer De Wolfe to cater for silent movies, but quickly established its high reputation with the advent of TV and radio. In the 70's, De Wolfe demonstrated their uniqueness from their rivals (KPM and Chappell) by employing composers who are considered the true musical innovators of their time (Alan Hawkshaw, Alan Parker and Nick Ingman to name a few) to experiment with new studio techniques. Amongst others, their music was used on the classic British TV series' The Sweeny and Whodunnit.

ok, i am not linking to the wiki, but i have to say the entry on de wolfe is illuminating (of note, the shaw bros scores!)

people usually record library albums for a track by track fee, these are then touted to people who might use the tracks, ie tv radio, film etc, the artist gets a cut when something is used.
alot of library musicians do just library music but alot of musicians also do a bit on the side, interestingly morricone's soundtracks, alot of the giallo stuff anyway, were never recorded for the films but just chosen by the music supervisors.
the famous brit guys like hawkshaw etc, ie the guys who did 'champ' were also session musicians on records like histoire de melodie nelson' etc.

i keep seeing ron geesin's name pop up in connection with library music
i only know him from his collaboration with roger waters on the generally daft (but occasionally on point) "music from the body"

How much are you paying for them on average Nick? It's this that has put me off so far from delving into this esoteric world...

avoid dealers! keep an eye on the e-bay auctions. now seems to be a pretty good time to invest - opening bids seem to be lower generally and not many ppl seem to have the stomach for a fight at the mo' ('the downturn' in full effect?) so the price ceiling seems to be coming down. i personally try not to spend more than 25 quid, but usually spend a lot less (mind you, i saw an Italian Cam library go for 52 quid the other day, so there are still a few bigger hits).

the prudent library collector needs knowledge, patience, instinct, cunning and exquisite timing;)

hmn. reading that list i actually have more library music than i thought. i guess the definition is still a bit hazy for me. i've got a few "persuasive percussion" lps, peter thomas orchestra, and like... a gaggle of electronic versions of standards (of note, a synth-version of gainsbourg's je t'aime moi non plus)

forgive me if someone here beat me to it but trunk put out a "the music library" book

plus i found a facebook group for library music, including DLs of Libary Music mixes:

^ ok i will admit to not listening to any of the mixes in my previous post
any good?

:p

so i was listening to the Abominable Dr Phibes soundtrack by Basil Kirchin at like 3 AM this morning (the soundtrack and the film are fantastic) and just now read the review of the soundtrack to Dr Phibes Rises Again done by John Gale----> who went on to start the Studio G library music company (this startled me). anyone see the sequel? i hear it is good...

i listened to side one of the Studio G comp "G-Spots" as recommended to me earlier in the thread----it is just what i was looking for. thanks again.

I work for de Wolfe :)

We basically started the whole thing so I'm led to believe. Johnny Trunk licenses some of his stuff from our archives (Dawn of the Dead for example), as do Finders Keepers.

Anybody interested in making library tracks give me a shout!!
