Non-Music Podcasts

Living abroad, and not being able to speak Portuguese very well, I've recently started listening to podcats in the car. Sometimes I just need something a bit more engaging for the brain on the drive to work.

So far it's Dr Karl & the Naked Scientist and Mark Kermode's film reviews.

I've started looking but trawling the Internet can take forever. Any recommendations?

I like the guardian football one, and Adam and Joe. I only listen to the latter if I've missed the programmme, though, and will concede that it is v much an acquired taste. I've tried the Collings and Herrin one but didn't like it.

I would like a good economics/ financial podcast if someone could recommend, please

Good thread. I'm discovering more stuff, both music wise and otherwise, through podcasts, so it's gotta be worthwhile to keep this thread bubbling over.

Thanks for the Arts And Ideas podcast, that's fantastic. It's good to hear rigorously discussed ethical issues, for instance, rather than just the usual practice of getting two wildly different viewpoints to mouth off with no prospect of the debate getting anywhere.

The Guardian's Media podcast is very good. It's very London-centric and middle class, but if you want to know why newspapers are closing, or to burrow beneath the hidden agendas of media outlets, which is more necessary than ever, it's excellent stuff.

I'm filling an empty iPod. Anyone with any dope podcast suggestions, non-musical or ever otherwise?

And are Rinse FM's podcasts shafted again? They stopped working for me recently.

Can I put a recommendation in for Radio 4's File On Four? Seriously good investigative journalism. When they do a programme on something, it completely sets the agenda on it.

These are both good. Planet money is straighforward and generally fun economics news, and EconTalk is more academically economics orientated. As a caveat, the Russ Roberts, the host of EconTalk, is a liberatarian microeconomist from GMU, and not always the most reliable person in terms of unbiased presentation of the facts. That said, because of the format (in depth interview with one academic per podcast), it doesn't metter so much. Roberts interviews a wide range of voices, many of whom tend to disagree with his politics, and furthermore, he is generally quite good at owning up to not being an expert in whatever field or sub-field is under discussion.

Two programs definitely worth checking out are -

Doug Henwood`s Behind the News broadcast weekly on WBAI (thursdays) and KPFA (Saturdays) in the US.

You can listen online or download from here

http://archive.wbai.org/

You get an hour long show on economics and politics with two or three guests each week. The program starts with DH brief comments on the current economic news and then the guests are interviewed; recents shows have had stuff on Iran, Pakistan, Obama`s health plan, Katrina, Goldman Sachs.

More info here

The other program is Against the Grain also on KPFA (broadcast three times a week) and itunes. Guests cover Politics, Society, and Culture. Shows are here :
