Convince Me Why I Should Like Frank Zappa

he had a very good moustache.

i always wanted to like him as i think george clinton was a fan (lot of satire, detachment and theatre in p-funk too), but i gave up. same for captain beefheart.

hm. Can't say Zappa as a classical composer is really all that significant to me - or at least, I'm always under the impression he's just aping Varèse - emperors new clothes and that. But who knows, I'm doubtless wrong, and I could probably get banged to rights if I spoke to a classical bod, but why would I do that? Polemic is the lifeblood of any healthy musical taste.

We’re Only In It For The Money and Absolutely Free are tolerable but it’s too much of the wrong kind of American humour for me. Same as The Residents.

Yeah it's weird. This kind of wacky acid frat boy humour, it's really grating once you realise it's there. British humour on acid is totally different.

Mr Zappa was pretty mocking of that stereotype, it being Friday night too

It's a miserable Friday night
I'm so lonely
And nobody'll give me a ride
To the grateful dead concert...oh rats!
I got to be free
Free as the wind
Free is the way
I got to be
Maybe I'm lost
Maybe I sinned
I got to be
Totally free
