METAL! Discuss

When I was in High School it was all about Converge, particularly the album Jane Doe.

Still love Converge to this day.

I'm from Boston so Converge shows were always an event for me and my friends. They're a great group of guys with some serious talent.

and yea Jane Doe is epic although i haven't listened to it in a couple of years.

Heard this the other day and thought it was pretty great, if you like the sort of thing.
Kind of black metal motorik, ridiculously single-minded and dank sounding. Reminded me of German Oak if you know that record. Sombre but grooving in a way.

Mare (beyond music, let alone metal)

hahahahaha
I know this band very, very well.

Seeing their name on this board has just made my day.
Shame they only put the one EP out, but they had some internal affairs to say the least. That one EP though is fucking intense. I always wondered how they'd repeat that again... and then they didn't.

:(

mr. tea, eager to hear this but the links seems to be off. can you double check it, please? thanks.

Yeah sure, I think those links must expire after a week or so.
I'll upload it again this evening.

Anyone remember that EP Dillinger Escape Plan did with Mike Patton?

I listened back to that the other day, and you know how people talk about "moments" in songs -- like bits where the song gets really good for a minute -- I'd describe that EP as being really shit with loads of good moments.

If that makes any sense. I wish more stuff sounded like the last third of 'When Good Dogs Do Bad Things'. But only the last third.

Shining - Grindstone

Norwegian proggy jazz metal that reaches dizzying heights of epicness.

heavily recommend this album.

Just got this. The silly mock-classical done in a Wendy/Walter Carlos-esque fashion analogue synth interludes are somewhat pointless. But The prog the metal and the jazz bits are fucking brilliant. And the pomp-prog horror film score meets Lynchian jazz piece "Psalm" is mindblowingly good. Invigorating stuff.

Totally agree with you about those cringe-worthy interludes, especially the one thats on there twice for some reason?! But yea the first three songs on the album are pretty unfuckwithable(the flute breakdown on the the first song just makes me smile) and Psalm is indeed fucking wonderful. Really would love to see them live...

Their first album has its moments as well but not nearly as many.

So tell me about Mare then. I know they only released one ep back in the day and have done nothing since. TELL ME MORE...

That's all there is to know. They put out one EP on Hydrahead and then broke up after a tour of the States.

The EP is well worth your time. Their excellent drummer and good friend of mine, Caleb, is now playing in Circle Takes The Square so you should check out their new stuff too.

I like the whole song, but I do know what you mean; that climax at the end is amazing. Have you ever heard 'Captain Midnight' by Tomahawk? There's a similar bit there...

That Shining album is ridiculous; glad people are picking up on it. Their last album was a bit restrained and dull, but they've suddenly turned into a prog jazz Mr. Bungle or something. That and the Mystery Palace record are my favourite albums of last year.

Just gave this a listen to today, I'd never heard of them before til you mentioned them - I've never been big on the super evil black metal stuff.

But this shit is pretty intense and quite undoubtedly evil. This singer bloke sounds like a right mentalist from what I've read about him: endorsing suicide and faking his death and coming back as a ghoul and what not. I've never been to Scandinavia, but I get the feeling they have never seen the sun.

This is a different Shining Sick Boy...

there's this Shining who we are talking about and are on the more normal side of things and have pictures of puppy dogs on their site...

LOL

Well that definitely explains a lot and the two, it appears, could not be anymore different from each other. I was wondering where the Mr. Bungle comparison was coming from.

:)

That picture is brilliant btw.

Also a mighty cheers to the person who put the Strapping Young Lad up. You basically just pulled a very distant memory out of my brain from my days in high school that would otherwise have been irretrievable.
