He's very a good showman Skrillex, genuinely entertaining good value for money as live experience. Not that i paid any money but if I had I would have felt that I got my money's worth. Giant videoscreens, a nice bit where he does this tune that he remixed by someone else, "You Are My Cinema" i think it's called, at any rate he flips the vidscreens around so that the audience can see themselves on these towering mirrors essentially, and all you can see is the upheld phones glittering. It's a nice moment, very stadium rock. This was quite a while ago, when I checked out a big EDM thing here in LA.
And he's an endearing presence, something very sweet about the way he engages with his fans. Well, he's from an emo background isn't he, so it's bound to be a more reciprocal 'we love you Denver' kind of thing innit. none of that too-cool indie / underground type vibe.
I went with my 12 yr old last year to an emo arena show, 21 Pilots - huge soulless sterile venue but they made it seem intimate. Phenomenal show actually - amazing production values, very hi-tech. But every single person in the 15 thousand audience (except for me) was singing along to every single word (and rapping along to the very prolix rap bits - they are sort of hybrid of emo, hip hop and a little bit of trance in there as well). it was really touching yet nothing to do with rock really. Something else.
