i mean one of the critiques with Jay is that he's always been seen as a "callous" rapper in terms of emotional depth and how he carries himself in general. Like i said these days i find the beat to Takeover so plodding to listen to and while the disses he made at Nas hit the mic and the end of the day Jay Z wasn't saying anything different about Nas that other dissapointed rap nerds were saying about him at the time it's just that he was the one who had access to a mic.


There's tracks where he's expressed his guilt before going back as far as his first album "regrets", D'Evils, you must love me, the last one is quite striking cause its off 2nd album where a decent chunk of it is him trying to ape the bad boy shiny suit sound to questionable results.

the interview had to have been around when 4:44 came out which a large part of that album was like him in "elder statesmen" mode passing down his black capitalist gems of wisdom and breaking down his persona to say it was bullshit (like he had such a problem using it to get to where he wanted to throwing people under the bus who helped him get there, locking off other rappers careers and making him look like he did it all by himself)

i mean will they? i ask because alot of the space is still dedicated to rappers who at this point in time still take up alot of the space.

if anything i'm still surprised that you would say you find Wu boring cause looking at Ghostface's best stuff is like the middle ground between the gritty sometimes cerebral street raps and the more off kilter side of things

consider this where he raps over The Delfonics la la means i love you not a sample just the song

@shakahislop or this which is one of my favourite RZA beats period and has a really good Gilligan's Island refference in it aswell

@shakahislop as you know like everybody else on the planet the new Kendrick album out but i'd be interested to know what you think of the 4-5 other rappers i brought up in New Rap who got albums out today

Yeah cool. I can tell you what I think about these guys without having investigated much or listening to the new ones, as a kind of baseline:

Quelle Chris: BORING BORING BORING
Daboii: No idea
Leikeli47: Like bits and pieces, she did one about Hoyt-Schmernerhorn subway station I think
shawney binladen: No idea
rxk nephew: Think amerikkan terrorist is incredible
Gabe 'Nandez: No idea
Kendrick: Never heard of him

also @shakahislop Kendrick yknow Kendrick Lamar the same guy who you spend how much of this thing talking about how you was listening to him in the middle east lol

i like Quelle Chris and i don't really like rxk nephew that Amerikkan Terrorist thing outside of maybe the beat is the definition of "listen to once and never again"

yeah i was joking about kendrick. i actually rinsed amerikkan terrorist for a couple of weeks at christmas, i got a lot out of it.

i did listen to the new kendrick one this morning. he's moved into a new world of mediation recently where there's like.....threads on efestivals and multiple stories in the guardian about it...which doesn't really matter but which is offputting to me. first listen didn't do much for me except to notice that it seems like a pretty interesting album, might get something out of it.

oh yeah Christmas perfect time to hear lyrics about eve from the bible being threatened with violence and how dissapointed he was finding out Will Smith played a gay man in six degrees of seperation

as far as that kind of coverage for Kendrick i mean...its been like this from his first album dunno how you haven't noticed it before it's only gotten worse since he won that pulitzer, i'm in no rush to listen to it and i feel like i might not even listen to it at all.

this isn't bad i was trying to remember where i heard the name Rago Foot before and i remembered he did a mixtape with King Carter a few years ago and some of the beats on Navy Blue's Ada Irin (wonder what happened to Carter i liked him)

so how did you come across this? considering the rappers we've tended to talk about this is very left field for you

Saw Mike recently open for gibs. no idea how well known he is in london but when I saw him in S.F his set was a little awkward. think the audience didn't know many of his songs. maybe a difference in demographics, (whats the overlap of gibs and MIKE? how popular is he in the west vs ny and london?) or just the fact that he hasn't really toured that much. overall still enjoyed it.

Dunno if you seen this but I like it. ZaZa much better when audience know the lyrics:
