I'm bravely starting a very un-dissensus thread here, but sometimes you just have to stick your head above the parapet and charge foolishly towards the enemy's guns. Many years ago, I suppose when I was at university, I really liked this band. Quite an odd band with hindsight, cos now I can see that they had influences form krautrock and dub and various other things I probably didn't know about then - or of which I had but the vaguest knowledge - but whereas normally when indie bands have these influences they attempt to create something that ties all of those things together - they aim at creating some kind of transcendental ur-music which brings together the best bits of dub and krautrock and jazz and techno. And of course they always fail. But as far as I can tell DIV never bothered with that, they would just sort of pastiche one genre, and then with their next song, another
Sometimes, as with this kinda krauty pastiche I think it really worked and in fact (I'll admit that this is much to my surprise) it still stands up..
And this goth thing is also pretty good I reckon (although - I think it was this one - someone played me an obscure post-punk tune whose similarities to this were remarkable. To the extent that either it's a beyond extraordinary coincidence or they should just admit it's a cover).
This one I link to just to show how little cross-pollination they introduced between the genres they liked.
Anyway, the point is, the other day I heard the following song somehow. And this surprised me for a number of reasons - firstly, I honestly thought that they had stopped making music in about 2003, and secondly, this tune is actually really nice. Once again I realise that they have cleverly and successfully pastiched something I really like - in this case a kind a of cold library funk that could quite nicely soundtrack a Peter Strickland movie.
And, that kinda intrigued me and I looked at their discogs and I was stunned to discover that they (or I suppose it's really just he isn't it?) has been plugging away for about twenty years after I had assumed that they split up and they have released loads of singles and albums and stuff. I found this amazing. But I'm not gonna just to listen to it all obviously.
But I wanna know, have they done any good stuff in the period since I totally stopped paying attention? Also did they do any good things in the period before that (I suppose that i was never paying that much attention)?
Plus, what do people think in general? Am I gonnna receive a load of soul destroying abuse for starting this thread? Or worse, the slowly dawning embarrassment of an utterly cold shoulder? Or will loads of you perhaps come crawling out of the woodwork to say that you secretly love this band? I doubt that, but I would be equally interested to hear for some creative criticism and inventive insults if that's what you feel is most appropriate. Or an explanation for why record collection rock was so big at that point.
