he's a smart one i reckon, he didnt rush things, he sat back and built his skills ready to make the massive moves he has been making

but really benga has always been at the top, if you look at the big apple releases, he's always been on a par with (or at least very very close to) skream i reckon. and the newstep cd has some incredible tracks on

but yeh, i agree, he's sick!

I like Benga but i dont agree with all the hype here. at all.

While he lead over Skream to begin with - ie in 2002 - he subsequently didn't "sit back" while Skream was making moves, he pissed off to be a commercial music engineer for major labels, and frankly who would blame him given how small dubstep was then.

i dispute that he's now on the level with DMZ & Loefah. Each of those three have an utterly trademark style they've developed on their own. Benga's still seems, well, not so unique.

By Chris Blacklay's own admission (he put it out) "Newstep" was less an album, more a collection of tunes Benga had made that month. Gutta compared it to a Carl Craig LP, and no offence Gutta, but that was the most laughable comparison I'd heard in a while.

Then there's the recent Planet Mu releases which, all dry, needlessly hard and gnarly, depress me like Hatcha sets have done recently. All of which make me think the best is *yet* to come out of Benga...

I just dont know
i wouldnt say he's on dmz's level, at all, but who is? i think he's smacking it still...in terms of current output i think he's on a comparable level to skream (although perhaps that says more about skream's slight fall from grace than anything else)

i think there was the implication in that interview at gutterbreakz that he had expressly chosen to develop his skills away from the scene (i.e. engineering, and musical theory) before coming back onto it...is this not the case?

i dont rate the 12 with Hatcha at all, but i think Comb60s is an incredible tune... and i wouldnt call it hard and gnarly at all! im yet to hear the big apple release properly. who is the A&R at big apple out of interest?

the main thing i'd like to see come from benga is a shift in aesthetic... as you say he has a distinctively 'dry' sound, which, while interesting at first (or in moderation), can become a little wearing if theres too much

That tune Benga's done with Artwork is pretty fresh and exciting ("What Happened?"). That's got to be one of the most unqiue and astonishing dubstep tracks around at the moment.

I think there are elements of Benga's sound that remind of artists like Carl Craig, Gerald, UR, 4-Hero and Herbie Hancock - of course Mystikz should be in there as well. I'm sure Kodwo Eshun has a name for this 'nuum - Afro-Jazz-Future-Tech-Funk or something. Not saying he's there yet, but you can see where it might be going.

Having said that, maybe that's not such an interesting direction after all - seeing as we've been there before. Let's hope dubstep keeps delivering real surprises.

.

It's great but i'm still not sure about who's produced it - has this been confirmed by anyone with the knowledge to confirm as i've heard differently from a very reliable source.

well i think ntype let it slip on his rinse show, but it seems clear that whoever it is doesnt want it to be known, so intentional misinformation may well be a part of that. i figure ill just allow guessing and enjoy the tracks! im sure it'll come to light eventually

No of course I'm not sure. I think N-Type was originally saying it was Benga and Artwork, and now he's saying it's not. Benga dropped it at DMZ on Sat though - and his set was nearly all his own stuff. So, don't know.

Magnetic Man is a great name.

Magnetic Man is a great name and i'm pretty sure now i know who they are. But yeah as you say El' i'm just enjoying the tunes, but knowing who it is does but a different spin on them

lol you're a cheef! i'd resolved myself with ignorance then you drop the teaser

thats interesting about big apple, i wonder what we're going to see coming out of them from here on then. i have to say i havent been too happy about hatcha's recent direction in selection, i hope that the label's return can live up to its heritage. im very excited that artwork is back on the scene though

Martin - the question has just popped into my head - what's neil joliffe up to these days - is he still around?

I saw him at FWD>> over the summer when El-B played. Seeing him, El-B and Oris in the same room was pretty funny. He does non-music stuff now and seem happy.

just picked up the "roots of dubstep" cd and i've got to say that in addition to the great track selection (obviously), it's a really cool package. from a graphic design perspective, it's really well conceived...and that poster is a hoot, must have been a real challenge to map everything out.

actually surprised all the connections haven't already been debated here.

nice job.

No, i'm rubbish at keeping up with all the latest tunes. I just buy the records that come in the shop. I had bit of a poke around but couldn't find any audio.
