well thats the nature of being underground isnt it...

don't know about legality but graft begets graft..

as they say..

welcome ramadanman btw.:)

i really hope it works out for them. someone mentioned the spectre of kiss upthread - thats got to be the worst possible outcome of a pirate going legit - for everyone bar the shareholders that is.

but it doesn't have to go that way if they remember what is the core of rinse, their values with music.

does anyone know what sort of things rinse would have to change / comply with to become legal then?

i always though a pirate had to spend three years off air before it could be legitimately relaunched as a legal radio station. If that is true then, with the rapidity with with grime and dubstep changes, i can not picture Rinse taking this route.

what blackdown said ages ago about arists who don't get played out anywhere, be it radio or clubs, yet still being successful

i'd be really interested to hear how many units say geoim's records have shifted. cos you never hear them on rinse, or at fwd etc. anyone got any figures?

I suppose you could email boomkat or rooted and ask them for figures.

I suspect that records by artists like Geiom probably sell to the wider electronic scene as much as dubstep purists, even if his dubstep fanbase is smaller than that of the big players.

The fact that tunes by people like Geiom etc don't get played at London raves doesn't really mean a huge amount now that dubstep has a global following. Even the lack of pirate radio play doesn't matter much. For the majority of folk, those that just download pirate mixes off barefiles, the shows could easily just be any other internet mix - and barefiles has plenty of non-pirate radio mixes with artists like Juju and Geiom featured.

Obviously London is still the focus of the scene but the internet has levelled the playing field to some extent. It's not like jungle back in the day when big DJs could easily lock off new producers simply by not playing their beats.

It means a lot to the press and the originators still looking to promote dubstep as a strictky uk ting. Sadly...vinyl, dubplate culture, exclusive bigname dj play and pirate radio are still the measure of dubstep popularity

BTW Hell Science Dept tunes are now available at...

itunes
napster
clickgroove
tunetribe
djdownload
addictech
beatport
juno
mixmag
trackitdown

...of course you should know we gets no love from anybody in 'the scene' so with respect to the net we are on a level playing field

another point worth raising again is, initially the innovators get cloned but then once the clones evolve, the innovators start cloning the clones and in some cases may use their position to lock out the clones especially if they control the media...

yeah id rather go onthe 15th to be honest but im down visiting on the 8th..Geeneus is top.

tho, to get on a slightly heretical tip, i find youngsta a little bit boring, i mean hes obviously incredibly technically skilled but i think he still just plays dubs from dmz, skream, d1, and now headhunter and thats it!! maybe n-type also. give me the man like 9 anyday...

I just dont know
i know what you mean, he's nowhere near my favourite dj in general, but within that line-up i think he'll fit perfectly... given that pinch and distance will play more sort of leftfield material (from more diverse producers) and geeneus will play grimier styles, i think that youngsta's vision will be given refreshment in contrast

yeah fair point, it is a well balanced line-up. i'm tempted by the idea of spending NY in plastic People now actually!!

I'm going to be reaching London in time for New Years.

Where do you usually go about buying tickets for FWD? I'd like to get mine ahead of time.

you usually just pay on the door. new year's is ticketed obviously, so reckon it will probably be through one of the big online vendors.
