but going back to your original point sick boy, currently no artist makes all of their income from their creative work.
I think Loefah does. I could be wrong. Plus of course Kevin Martin / Pressure.

If he was a web-bot, then presumably we could turn him off, but as it is... :(

I also have it on good authority that Skream used to have a job retrieving lobsters out of Jayne Mansfield's arse.

It's just occured to me that people outside of the UK probably won't know that Benga was once a presenter on kids' tv programmes like "Record Breakers" and "The Really Wild Show".

SGT Pokes is the Liberal-Democrats' Shadow Secretary for Community Cohesion and is regularly interviewed on programmes like the BBC's Newsnight in that role. Which always raises a smile round our house!

I'd be interested to know of the reasons [other than credibility] behind seemingly popular stations like Rinse staying pirate if anyone is up on such things?

i'm pretty sure they want to go legit.

combination of rumours and circumstantial evidence: the latter being that they have security now, they have a pass system for entry, there's a ban on swearing before 9pm or something... all adds up. whether they'd get the investment/support from ofcom/whatever else it is you need, is another matter.

re: dubstep providing a sustainable income - how much will your avg name dubstep dj (n-type, youngsta, whoever) get for a gig at somewhere like fwd? i have no idea... but if they're doing two bookings a week, minus dubplate cutting and other expenses, you could prob work out what the 'profit' comes to

they've also been bought by someone who could help legitimise them or at least hook them up with survival and a future.

there is some excellent dubstep at the moment you know, when you take a rest from the heat of dmz etc, you realise there is some very tasty stuff coming thru.
good stuff on hotflush by shackleton, also juju, and geiom, even the sort of digidub of kromestar are refreshing things for me.

that bass clef records is pretty gut too

ah finally my dissensus account works

regarding day jobs, a few jobs i know some producers do are things like youth work, and stuff related to the music industry like publishing and marketing.

i always find the 'double life' really fascinating - being a big name and walking into fwd, being recognised by everyone, then getting on the bus back home and no one knows who you are...

also really interesting about rinse perhaps making the move to legality - if so that's big. as long as there isn't too much compromise...

also

what blackdown said ages ago about arists who don't get played out anywhere, be it radio or clubs, yet still being successful

i'd be really interested to hear how many units say geoim's records have shifted. cos you never hear them on rinse, or at fwd etc. anyone got any figures?
