Misty in Roots - Live the Counter Eurovision 79



I had this on cassette when it came out - long worn out and lost now. Never been able to replace it or seen it reissued and Discogs prices are way high. Love the double congo (or tom drum) hits throughout the session, makes it hypnotising. All those weird vocal hicks, ticks and the players offering encouragement to each other are picked up in the recording, this seems to have more presence than crowd noise in the recording.

That was a John Peel favorite - he played bits from it constantly. One time I remember him describing the album as sounding Medieval, which I thought was an evocative perception.

Coil live is essential. Some of their best albums are live renditions. JB goes from being a shy presence on stage into a force of nature.

Talk Talk - Live in Montreux is a perfect encapsulation of their middle period and Hollis is intense.

Japan - Oil on Canvas contains beautiful interpretations of the studio counterparts.

Joy Division - Les Bains Douches reveals a whole different band.

The aforementioned King Crimson live albums are frequently treasure troves.
