Can you explain the appeal of these? Do you watch all 40 minutes?
yeah i have watched loads.
some were extra interesting e.g. the matches factory, and how you make chainlink fence, electical wire, nails etc as i was tbh curious especially about the #fencing which i posted in chOTD thread as it had a good soundtrack. those others you will find in yt recommends. there seem to be lots of channels posting new videos often which rack up huge numbers of views in a few days, so it's probably some sort of a scam but also very mesmerising (and impressively free of PPE/H&S)
classic of the genre imho is the one where they make bolts

So are you interested from a technical point of view i.e. how things are done or do these videos provide a sort of meditative experience that they weren't intended to provide?

I guess that I would be about the 10 millionth person to point out that there is a certain strand in American food (and life) which is simply about MORE. And it has its place no doubt, I think it just feels particularly uncomfortable to me now just after a period of Christmas excess, hence my strong reaction.

When I was on mushrooms there was something about all the food colours, the utter ridiculousness of the piling up, his expressions, it was incredible.

I had just turned off 2001 a space odyssey, very welcome relief after that (and I stopped watching that well before stargate).

The other one I saw on that same trip that was hilarious and had great mushy visuals was this one

about a perfect couple building a house in the wilderness and the perfect comment at the very top.

Don't think it would be possible to watch it all though, very boring.

But some excellent stuff happening with the landscapes, as though because it was on a small screen, the mushrooms were able to configure the visual possibilities better like, on same trip I was staring at some leaves and they were Fizzy, but nothing like what was happening on the screen, where the mountains were all different colours, breathing in and out etc.

yeh bit of both,
but also there's something attractively techno-primitivist about how the machinery is maintained at such an minimal level

& the variety of different processes & products keeps bringing me back, i have watched quite a few non-pakistani manufacturing videos too, some have comely presenters like that hippy gardening one

It's like that Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and they show how they make a sandwich and they'll be all "we take a lil pound beef, and then put a lil pound of pork in and lil five sausages and then lil chicken, and then we add lil cheese sauce and lil mayo and then we deep fry the whole fucking lil thing and then we cover it in our lil special sauce and then we put lil meat on top and then.... "

Luka’s Uncle Rural vids created a series of exchanges with my younger bro and sis who‘ve cooked for a living for forever, which escalated quickly. Summary - I’m about 75% veggie now

Bro/sis countered with ‘wtf do you think’s in sausages’, like that’s a secret but couldn’t argue with ‘Uncle Rural is nitrite free and zero waste, get on the offal train you sledge’

I mean yes, less waste, protein is sort of protein, which are all great but escalating things to waking up every day to some random Pyrenees method of de-valving heart meat butchery skills, or 100 recipes for tripe (the worst), gets old fast

I think there's an ASMR quality to these, and just the satisfaction of watching a job get done.

My wife's uncle came to visit us and there was a guy roofing when we went out for a drink, he said how it was nice to see that, don't see it so often, basically stopped to watch him for 10 mins in the cold

potentially rewarding rabbit-holes include

1. nonce-hunting.

barty watched one recently where they make the intellectually handicapped nonce punch himself in the face repeatedly
