thanx BD...
heres the story...
...my bro came round, we're getting irie and I'm playing some tunes off the puter. He's never heard any dubstep so i start him off with 'milanese' and i can see it's fully doing his head in...heheh
so i switch to playing some world music of the flute variety and after the intro it gets a bit meh so I open up Omens remix of Loefah's Voodoo in another app. The tune was ripped from his myspace a while back...
...and what do you know ??? not only are they in time and in key but they finish at exactly the right time together
need less to say we're buzzing so a quick lineup in 'acid', saved as an mp3 and voila...
...since then I been thrashing it. I just find it really calming despite the 'fucking voodoo magic' sample which is weird cos on their own 'Voodoo' is all dark and menacing and on it's own 'Theres a fire' is all OTT new age but together they balance out
a native american, buffalo nation flute song mixed with some remixed dark sth side london dubstep containing a sample of a jamaican from a 'predator' movie then mixed together by a polynesian
given that they were recorded/remixed with no knowledge of each others tune in different times and locales by different cultures then mashed together in another time and locale is what makes it interesting. No fancy edits, no beatmatching or time stretching just like the 'burial and dead truth' tune i screwed
...it's like it shouldn't work but it does. I guess thats what the 21st century smorgasbord of culture/art clash has in store for us with dubstep and it's ethnic samplings being the prime example for music...sounds of the global village with no cultural boundaries
...this tune more than any sums up my musical year. Nu age ambient and dubstep.
Have ya selves a good one...
cheers
