I wonder how important such things are... seems that the salient point is that some people treat it as serious if a bad level is immediately reflected in the stock market. Sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy in a way perhaps.

I guess it's not really surprising as everyone knows that tariffs are uncontroversially antithetical to trade. Apart from gung-ho fools on social media crowing about how the US is guaranteed to win any trade war (probably the types who think China pay tariffs on Chinese goods) the majority of people see that when tariffs are in effect almost everyone loses.

ie if US introduces a tariffs on Chinese thingummies then the immediate effect is that Chinese companies that make thingummies will lose out as will US consumers of thingummies and also manufacturers that need to use thingummies and others in the chain who are indirect users of thingummies - the only winners will be companies that aren't Chinese but who also make thingummies.

Basically there are a lot more losers than winners and if you introduce a lot of tariffs you get a lot more losers lots of times. You could describe it as (loads of losers)squared which I think is often referred to as a mixture of biscuits.

I got a call from a random number today and an automated voice with an American accent started going on about "your immigration form" so I hung up. I assume it's scammers just calling up any number they can find online to take advantage of people in the US being worried about being deported.
