Minimal house anthems

While we're on alexs....alex smoke generally kills it as well.

Yeah I like some of the older Alex Smoke stuff I've got like, Chica Wappa. Infact Chica Wappa would certainly fall into the category of anthemic minimal. Wicked tune. Not so keen on the more recent Smoke releases I've heard though. Any recommendations?

As a label Soma are generally pretty spot on with their minimal to be fair. Still waiting for a new Sci-Fi Hi-Fi compliation though!

The tune he did called prima materia was excellent I thought, and he did a good remix of Steve Reich as well, though i don't know how old that was.

New the month in techno column over at pitchfork where Drunken ballet is talked about, along with the other tunes in that project. That club sounds absolutely insane, makes me want to go be a techno tourist. I just don't know how people can go for that long though, even when i'm fucked there comes a point in the night when i just want to head for the after party. the drug use in those places must be sky high.

what do you all make of have to get back by (josh!) wink off the richie hawtin min2max compilation?
i think its the best techno track i've heard in a long time,i couldn't believe it when i found out who it was by.
i was reading a book when the track came on and dancing around my room by the end of it

I agree, it’s great. I’m digging the Villalobos remix of Shackleton’s «Blood on My Hands» at the moment, but I guess that might be old hat to you dubstep freaks.

Go! Best club I've ever been to - it's nother world. Just flicked thru Sherburne's column - the awe is spot-on, but I think he overdoes the hedonism and drugs angle. I've been twice, and no-one's been anywhere near dancefloor copulation; when we emerged from doing speed in a bathroom, all we got were disapproving, almost parental stares. But for everything else, it's the best.

He used to play real deep back in the 90s, at least whenever I heard him, and I had a couple of great cassettes which have needless to say disappeared since. His Profound Sounds series is pretty good too. Heard a recent set (from WMC I think) which was great in spots but which totally pissed me off by ending in 15 minutes of Higher State variations... Get over it dude! So yeah I guess he is a bit hit and miss.

I saw him play in 03 and it felt like the crowd were just waiting for Higher states of..., in the end he did a similar thing, played a really long version of it and the crowd went nuts. Was a good set though, I don't think it's just him stroking his ego I think sometimes the crowd is just waiting for higher states, his signature tune or something (this was at a fairly "commercial" venue/club though).

Yeah, I went a couple of times when I was in Berlin last summer, really good vibes, good music and a good crowd, best club nights I went to last year. I didn't last into the morning though, if I go again Im thinking about making an early day of it and showing up at 8 in the morning...

Anyways, spending a summer in Berlin got me into buying techno again, the scene there is lovely and there is a lot of good music coming out.

Last time I fell asleep and woke up around 11...utterly surreal, in a fug of alcohol and chemicals, not realising where I was, a true waking dream...

How come you came to spend a whole summer in Berlin out of interest (*quick suppression of violent jealousy* ;) )?

I just can't imagine actually falling asleep in a club, i got refused at a pub in scotland recnelty just cos i looked sleepy. Berlin's definitely on my list of places to go. and yes that villalobos remix of shackleton is truly awesome.

It was about 7am, to be fair  Worth it just for the "Jesus Christ this dream feels spookily real" feeling. Plus the leather couches are rather comfy.

haha yeh i wasn't saying that i would never do it, just never being allowed to do it. I remember reading ages ago on simon silverdollars blog about fabrics birthday and how it stayed open til 2 the next afternoon....has anyone been to fabric that late yet? I find it hard to imagine a british club being like that...

it really depends on when you're there -- i've been to berghain on nights that it really was like that, especially back in the toilets. but i also tried explicitly to scale back that angle as well.

agreed that it's a misstep to wait on the luciano "drunken ballet" but i'm sure everyone will be playing it this summer anyway off CD and CDR. i know i will be. :)

last time Villalobos played Fabric it was open until 2pm and I was there, predictably messy atmosphere. but it's not that out of place, the place is packed to the rafters with Euros to begin with, and the type of Londoners who habituate Villalobos nights take prodigious quantities of drugs anyway. (Fabric is a funny place. you go in there at 2am and the stairs are already FULL of completely monged people -- when it doesn't even get going until 5am on the bigger/extended nights...)

yeh i'm going to see villalobos later this month in glasgow but the place will close at 3, kind of a shame in a way, can't imagine he'll get that much time to properly stretch out and go deep.

Am i right in thinking that ketamine is the main drug taken by people nowadays at fabric and in berlin etc? Can't say its ever appealed, after hearing just how monged some people iknow have been on it. Though i realise i don't even know that much about ketamine and its effects, maybe i'll go talk to frank or something.

eh, I don't know if it's the main drug. never tried it, personally. it's apparently very popular, yes, but I'd be surprised if it beat out good old E overall. certainly lots of extremely intoxicated people at Fabric but it's hard to tell what they're on (and I doubt they're particularly purist about it!)

yeah, I'm going to Glasgow too. I doubt he'll go deep at all, it's going to be weird seeing him play so early. they seem to have stuffed a whole year's worth of bills onto one 5 hour line up, quite disconcerting really.

Is that at Pressure at The Arches?

Saw Sven Vath there last summer, and I have to say The Arches is one of my favourite UK venues. Good mixed crowd down at Pressure as well.

Ketamine seems the drug de jour round these parts. There's even a monthly rave called Ketaloco, which I think Paul Woolford (of Erotic Discourse fame) might well be involved with... There's nuff people with "Sex Ket Sleep" t-shirts around the techno scene as well. Never done K myself thought and don't fancy it.

Oh, and that Steve Reich remix is a pretty cool track. I'd forgotten about that one.

yeh i don't quite know how they're gonna manage it....suppose loco dice and ricardo will be on in the one arch and the others in another...which means loco will be on at 11 or something stupid. have you been to pressure before? I've not, i don't know what the crowd is like.

Ricardo is playing Fabric end of this month with Alex Under, Craig Richards + Dave Clarke. I plan on getting well and truly off my face and definitely staying till 9 when it shuts. Co-op at plastic people on Sunday to recover. Probably go FWD on fri, what a sick triple-header!

That club is Berlin sounds incredible. I think a well planned weekend of OTT hedonism is needed to go and rinse all the top nightspots there.

yeh it is pressure. Pretty expensive but i suppose i'll take the hit, it'll be worth it.

Mr. Sherburne, what was barcelona like for clubbing? I seem to remember reading on your column that you'd stayed there for a while.

I've never been to Pressure, no, weirdly. the 3am thing puts me off but I can't really justify going down to London *again* (been to Fabric too many times in the past year and a half).

VV, I wouldn't be surprised if they have an afters again.

EDIT: oh yeah, the cost puts me off too!
