Also, is anyone else getting annoyed with the super slow motion replays of things that no one could care about (chanting fans, player glowering at referee)?

I enjoyed the super slo-mo of Elmander (I think) after England's winner, which appeared to confirm that the Swedish for "Fuuuuuuuuuckkkkkkkkkk!" is "Fuuuuuuuuuckkkkkkkkkk!"

"If England win their group I could actually see them making the semis, I think they'd have a decent chance against Italy or Croatia (I'm assuming Spain will win Group C)."
I dunno, Croatia could beat Spain and knock them out couldn't they?

Oh yeah. I my head their record is actually even worse than it is in real life. Yesterday when they went behind I thought it was done and dusted. Then Terry missed that header - which is probably for the best I guess - and I thought that was their one chance to equalise. That was a shocking miss by the way although the keeper did well I guess.

But Theo scored from the subsequent corner. In Terryworld that counts as an assist. He's probably already ordered his own commemorative medal.

I was watching the game with a Finnish friend and he said that in Finland they call a goal like Carroll's "An English goal". It was a fucking good header though.

Darned cockwombles.
Does Rooney have to come straight back into the side? Obviously he's in a different world from Carroll as an individual player, but the notion that star players have a right to automatically play, rather than choosing the team that's best for the upcoming games, has undone England constantly over the past few decades.

Also, I know it's obvious, but if van Basten or Ronaldo had scored Wellbeck's goal, it would be being hailed as one of the greatest goals ever scored in the Euros. Just sublime.

England's problem has been picking players on reputation (Gerrard & Lampard in a partnership that didn't work; playing Beckham & Shearer all game, every game long after they were past their best), but it's not as if Rooney would be thrown into a formation that doesn't suit him or breaking up Carroll and Wellbeck's magical synergy (both played well last night, but they didn't particularly play together). Rooney should play because he's better than Wellbeck or Carroll and could play alongside either of them.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. I wonder, if Ferdinand had been playing would England have defended those set-pieces better? A question no-one seems to be asking in all the excitement. Or maybe I missed it.

"How was that unexpected? This is by far the weakest group in the Euro2012 apart from Russia. Greece, Poland and Czech Republic are incredibly weak. I'm a 100% sure Russia and Czech Republic will go thru."
Hmmm... Spain to go out next maybe?

Ah, that was me right? HAHA. Didn't see this coming. Maybe Holland to go through as well then. I guess anything can happen. If you survive the group phase then you will only have to play three games, if you encounter weak opponents or have a lot of luck you can easily become champion. Greece did this some years ago.

The groups just turn on a knife edge, there are a lot of teams going into the last game who could top their group or go out. Probably most teams. Shows that you have to concentrate to the end and take nothing for granted.

I actually typed that out but deleted/self-censored it ; cos I didn't watch the whole game, I wasn't sure if it was just empty hypothesising. But for Sweden's second goal the defensive organisation was shocking, amateur, so maybe Rio would've marshalled the troops better.

Fair point about Rooney having to come back in. I'm just curious to see what would happen if he didn't. Still can't really support England this time around though due to the Rio debacle, regardless of the intermittently very good football. Very happy to see Terry's goal chance saved.

Athenry is in Ireland, the song is about a bloke who's gonna get shipped away to Australia and he and his lady are singing to each other, over the prison walls.

Which is kinda enough to appeal to Irish sensibilities of leaving Ireland, yearning, impossibility of love etc. It's about dreams that have been lost, I guess.

Oooh Athenry wiki

Paddy Reilly's version is nice and has lyrics

Apparently "murder on Gdansk floor" was the headline in one Irish paper.

It's worth losing my £2 sweepstake ticket just for that (not like it was ever gonna win anyway).
