Re: Third invoking Benji, it's all about the curation of 'vibes' isn't it? It's a corny sounding thing that when misapplied ends up with you promoting the ambiguous 'influencer' culture but there's a truth to it.
Gilles didn't just play his tastes, he curated and consciously warped around a thing that was lush, classy (and as we know classy can be both exclusionary and inviting) and felt warm. Benji being his crate guy just wasn't the same, he thought it was about the records and about the taste and about the sense of new, no idea how to format or make it make sense.
I will say I gravitated more to Benji in my BBC Listening phase than Gilles but that's because the Gilles stuff was so adult oriented and jazzy and never felt enthusiastic. Also I don't trust anyone who thinks Cuba is good musically; it's just a ploy to avoid interacting with countries where reggaeton and cumbia exist.
