Sun Ra for Dummies

Lots of hoopla lately about his 100th birthday. I've never investigated Sun Ra, back catalog is too overwhelming...any suggestions of a few good albums to track down? I'm less interested in the noisy/free jazz stuff, more into the quieter/cooler albums. Appreciate the help.

getting started with sun ra

i've been reading a lot about sun ra recently, watched space is the place and done some more listening. i didn't get it before but now i'm totally enthralled. problem is he and the arkestra put out at least 200+ known recordings and they seem to run the gamut of styles and instrumentation...

I haven't even moved on to my STUDIO ONE BONGO MAN CENTRE LABEL pr0n selection

poss but but i am a veteran of the night and day, Manchester academy, band on the wall, popstarz. when mark radcliffe moved to the breakfast show i was amongst those holding vigil outside the BBC studios
