    New from Herbert

Past experience tells me that there be a more than a few Herbert haters on this forum; but I thought the rest of you might be interested to hear some stuff off his forthcoming LP :) He's stuck a couple of tunes up on Magic + Accident. Enjoy (in spite of the nasty wee Flash player). Much more...

    Trilogies/ Quartets/ etc

Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle: Quicksilver + The Confusion + The System of the World ( + Cryptonomicon) Bloody great. Quicksilver is, admittedly, about 1000 pages of scene setting but, given the scale of the project as a whole, I think that's forgivable.

    gnarles barkley

This comment pretty much sums up the general negativity towards this project on this thread: the primacy of ideas and opinion and the (perceived) politics of the situation over the song itself. You haven't even heard the tune, and yet already you're taking a position over it. Frankly, I just...

    NME - state of…

Is this him? Whatacunt. From the IPC website: "Conor picked up the Consumer Editor of the Year Award despite stiff competition from the cream of British editors, including Nuts editor Phil Hilton, Closer editor Jane Johnson and Woman & Home editor Sue James." Say no more.

    Burial interview @ Blackdown/Burial album

If you like these images, you'll love this: Kidd of Speed. Not as profi, but still an amazing narrative, and one of my most favourite things on the Interwang. Both a bit too much greenery for Burial, methinks; but it'd probably be a neat soundtrack nonetheless...

    Music for Babies

Thanks for these guys, much appreciated - tho I think I'm gonna go for something off Apollo where Eno's concerned. I'm reading that Moondust book at the mo, and dug it out for some background ambience. Top hole. ... or weed :) Apart from the first track, which I seem to recall has some sound...

'Eclectic' clubs in London **apologies for London-centric thread**

Poor Diplo. This thread's associating his name with something I don't think he's guilty of. You might be right that his set's are lacking pace or structure on a macro-level, but I think it's unfair to say that he only plays populist, crowd-pleasing stuff. He always seems to include a lot of...

    Music for Babies

I've seriously considered piping this mix in wholesale, but I think some of it might be a bit too scary :) If I haven't said it before: I love this mix, droid. And I've found myself repeating the opening Eno quote to anyone who'll listen...

    Music for Babies

No, this is not a thread in which to discuss the mid-90s Howie B album of the same name (tho feel free to reference tracks where appropriate)... Rather: the wife is up the duff, and I am counting down to the formation of ears upon my babies head, whereupon I plan to introduce it without delay...

    Burial interview @ Blackdown/Burial album

Finally got round to reading this last night - printed it out and read it on the train down the Gillingham line, with the perfect visual accompaniment wizzing passed the windows - London Bridge, New Cross, Lewisham... :) Nice job, Martin. I loved the fact that what s/he's doing is so fixed -...

Jeff Chang: “Why has nothing replaced hip hop?”

I think this is fairly spot on, to be honest. I read an interview with DJ Shadow years ago, where he described hip hop as omnigenre - it might have been in More Brilliant Than The Sun, now I come to think of it. Anyway, the point being, that one of hip hop's greatest strengths is that it can...

    Why Conspiracy Theories?

You see... that's what this thread is all about. I love this shit... :)

    Why Conspiracy Theories?

Erk. Maybe we're both guilty of misunderstanding the other. For my own part, I think maybe I interpreted rather too much of the cut & paste from 911truth.org to be your own views. If so, please accept my (genuine) apologies... But you could have saved us both some hassle if you'd...

    Why Conspiracy Theories?

What? Charlie Sheen as exemplar for the American people? To support your point that the majority of Americans now believe Bush & co. blew up the WTC? It is not. And I did not say that it was. But you seem to want to talk only about 9/11 related theories, and it's my personal feeling that it's...

    Why Conspiracy Theories?

You've made quite a number of points here. Will try and get back to them in due course, but in the meantime... Personally, I'm not referring to any specific conspiracy theories. I think the idea behind this particular thread was to discuss the hallmarks and significance of conspiracy theories...

    Why Conspiracy Theories?

I agree. I've found myself thinking about this subject a lot (more) since this thread started. I'm wondering to what degree the prevalence of easy conspiracy theories is an inevitable result of how much of the West's experience of the world is mediated. Mediation creates for us the illusion of...

ursula rucker on the 'ho-erisation' of hip-hop

I think Talib Kweli echoes these sentiments best (and, I might offer, rather more succinctly) in 'Africa Dream' when he says: These cats drink champagne and toast to death and pain Like slaves on a ship talking about who got the flyest chain One of my favourite ever hip hop lyrics, that.

    Lyrics - What's the point?

Generally, I'm not that fussed about lyrics; in that, they're about the fifth thing I'll notice about a song. Unless it's hip hop, in which case it's maybe second or third. That said, I was in Dixon's earlier, and they had "Toxic" on the stereo. The Britney Spears one. Whereupon I discovered I...
