    Personal remastering

Is there anyone out there who touches up the music that they have bought? I've been thinking of putting some stuff through my audio editor, hoping to ameliorate it through judicious EQing.

    The Most Unwanted Song

Probably old news, but hey, the operatic rapping is something else: The most unwanted music is over 25 minutes long, veers wildly between loud and quiet sections, between fast and slow tempos, and features timbres of extremely high and low pitch, with each dichotomy presented in abrupt...

Musicians you always get mixed up with other musicians

I find it very hard to remember that Mos Def and Roots Manuva are separate people. Does anyone else have this problem?

Songs with children's choirs in them

There is no song that cannot be improved by getting a choir of children to help out. Here's a couple to get the ball rolling, both catchy and/or annoying: Roxette - Stars <embed src=" &color2=0xBC8F8F&border=1" allowfullscreen="true" width="280" height="210" /> Pnau - Baby <object...

    bored bored bored

I've still got two weeks and a bit of holiday left and I've run out of things to do. Anybody got any ideas for interesting escapades for a 20-something Londoner?

    The Verdict

2000 cds on and I have completed my review of Modern Western Popular Music (808 State to Zyklon-B). There appear to be very few surprises in store, so it was time to draw the project to a close. I award Modern Western Popular Music, 1950-2008: B- Verdict on the current state of Modern Western...

    Touchy-Feely

Bought a Graham Massey (808 State) solo record today: Massonix - Subtracks (at full price no less!). It had a braille sticker on the front, presumably giving the name. Which album did this first? Is this a (welcome) new trend? Sorry - it's been an even slower day than usual in my brain. :(

songs spoilt by poor choice of vocalist

Luke Slater's Alright on Top is a collection of solid electropop backing tracks utterly shafted by the use of a guy who can't sing: Ricky Barrow of the Aloof. Does anyone else have any songs or albums that would be favourites but for the contribution of an ill-chosen vocalist (the assumption...

    Dinner Party Music

What have people foisted upon their unsuspecting guests in the way of ambient music? A DJ Spooky jazz mash-up was politely well-received last night but Aufgehoben ( ) soon unsettled the audience, forcing the insertion of French folk music (the philistines). Anyone managed to get away with...

    Simultaneous songs in stereo

One of the random things I bought this weekend was Luther Blissett - The Open Pop Star, a multi-artist ('Luther Blissett' is to the contributors a multiple-use nom-de-plume, an 'open reputation') cd of various oddities, mostly electronica. Anyway, the third track is two different songs played...

how mainstream record shops deal with their stock

Been wondering about stuff like this for a while: - How and why do shops like Impulse run sales of batches of seemingly random, leftfieldish stuff at £1 to £2 each: stuff like Four Tet. Where do the cds come from - from Impulse itself or are they leftovers from the larger HMVlikes? - What do...

    Lost in Translation

Watching Channel 4 news last night, there was a segment on 20 Romanian immigrants being arrested in Slough for suspected child slavery. Towards the end of the piece, the voiceover intoned gravely that profits made here were funding lavish lifestyles in the East and we were shown a slogan daubed...

    Jukebox Deejaying

I took it upon myself to entertain a captive audience of middle-aged Mancunian table-footballers this weekend with a half-hour set of classic hardcore and jungle, artfully juxtaposed with Rick Wakeman's noodlings, all coming from an unusually capacious electronic jukebox. Has anybody else also...

    Rapping 'Flow' Analysis

Have there been any concerted attempts to analyze rap vocals in terms of rhythm? I have found lots of stuff on subject matter but as yet no attempts to transcribe, in detail, the delivery of the lyrics (and their interaction with the beat).
