rolling back to the future garage/post-dubstep/alt-funkstep/intelli-2step etc thread

B: The elephant in the future garage room for me is that you can very effectively argue that UK funky is future garage, or certainly UKG mark II. For me any move to revive garage ideas should do its best to work with the energy and ideas of the funky scene, as it has grass roots support in...

rolling back to the future garage/post-dubstep/alt-funkstep/intelli-2step etc thread

I'd say there's probably an audience for this stuff who were oblivious of 2-step b/c of being too young or into entirely different things at the time - but I'd be surprised if people like this who hated 2-step. Although that's partly because being in Australia I barely knew anyone who was aware...

To complete the circle I was describing upthread, Roska vs Borish Dlugosch's "Bangkok" is basically a post-"Pon De Floor" tune, almost the exact same detuned riffing vocal sample, but then otherwise it's on an eastern tip somewhere between Exemen's "Far East" and early Jammer. Great stuff!

Love "Can't Say No". Seems like everything Miss Fire touches is, um, straight fire.

That's the Fuzzy Logik remix of Skepta ft. Jay Sean - "Lush". Big big tune. So uplifting. Except I've been wondering exactly what Skepta's saying? "Is this the Champagne Dance? No. Up goes the cork, the champagne pours. Up goes the cork, the champagne pours. This is the champagne (something...

Basically it relieves me of the grim prospect of trying to make a living out of writing about uk funky. Luka, that Unknown Strangers track is massive!

But I wasn't trying (or holding myself out as trying) to define funky, Martin, I was referring to its diversity, a fact which I suspect you know full well. I said in that post I linked to above: "You know a track is "uk funky" in the same way that a judgment of physical hotness is like the...

Martin that's a bit specious - it's like saying that you can't tell the difference between jungle and dubstep sonically because both fit the description "tracks with looped syncopated grooves with big bass drops" or something. i.e. there's other differences that fall outside the terms of the...

Yeah, he also was the first DJ I'm aware of to play "Badman Riddim". So he does break the rule (which is only for his radio show) but pretty rarely. He and his MCs are often referring to tracks that they can't play on the show for this reason.

Ha Jimi I think I must have last checked it before you linked me - thanks for that though. And it's not like the board is entirely devoid of people who appear to get funky - just mostly! I guess I'm just caught in a double bind of wanting to engage in music crit-style conversations about this...

This post I wrote a few months ago on "Wad", "Natty" and "Badman Riddim" might clarify my position on this mms: http://getphysical.blogspot.com/2009/09/pearson-sound-wad-soule-power-natty-dub.html I'm pretty open to "outsider" tracks (including from dubstep producers) becoming big on the scene...

Sure, but are you thereby saying there's no difference between basically every funky DJ playing Dennis Ferrer's "Hey Hey" and a whole bunch of DJs who make their name playing a mix of different genres playing Moska's "Nike"? I mean, I'm not sure how profitable it is to go into this...

but funky's a composite genre in a state of flux anyway, which is the most interesting part of it, any british producers are always just mutators, i've never heard two funky djs playing the same tracks which is a credit to it Really? You're saying you wouldn't be able to say which tunes are...

I said "I feel protective toward UK Funky" => "I get annoyed when I see people talking shit about it." The scene itself obviously couldn't give two shits what the more clueless journalists and people on message boards (I'm not meaning dissensus incidentally - check out the drowned in sound page...
