Films you've seen recently and would recommend WITH reservations

Perfect days is a very nice, beautiful, soothing film, but also utterly contrived, idealised and wishful. A film on a toilet cleaner who cleans spotless toilets whose life, while with its problems, also seems a bit too buffed clean. Wenders is a master director though.

Films you've seen recently and would recommend WITH reservations

i saw it the first time and def felt the emotion inside it. the second time i felt it was dull, plain, and lazy in expecting you to care through doing so little. the girl is great though. and i still dont know why ppl love paul mescal so much, beyond fancying him. i saw him in all of us...

Films you've seen recently and would recommend WITH reservations

zone of interest. formally its great, or at least very consistent (ie it never breaks its distance, stillness, etc), and the sounds (not really the music though which surprised me as its mica levi but apparently a lot of her score got cut) are really intense, and basically made me clench my gut...

How has burial dated for you?

why doesnt burial do dj-ing? or gigs even? im sure he could do performances and protect his identity, build it into the performance etc. is he just loaded already? or a victim of his own credo?

How has burial dated for you?

burial was not an official 'sadboy' artist but def one of the key names who made sad/melancholy music (like the xx, sampha, all those other post dubstep producers - now thinking of that ikonika quote about tracks that are like crying on the dancefloor, etc) popular/influential in the last 10-15...

How has burial dated for you?

not listened to any new burial in years but the most recent james blake album (which i mostly love actually) has a couple of really good obviously burial-leaning songs.

Will GRIME ever make it in America?

amazing. idk if i think that much of his slightly hammy dancehall vocals, but good for him for still being about and doing well. didnt expect to hear a grime mc working with skrillex, and funny that its flowdan, ie someone who americans might think of as being jamaican, rather than obviously...

    RIP Neil Kulkarni

im not really a major oasis fan but he did seem to spend a lot of time being hung up on the shitness of britpop and oasis and its pernicious effects on british music (and writing etc). entertaining to read his takedowns though. that style of music writing is not really fashionable anymore so...

Your Top Three Hip Hop Videos

Never had mtv or satellite tv so unless it was on terrestrial Tv, i never saw many music videos. Cos of that i romanticize the archaic idea of videos spoiling the purity of the song. Idk what modern music videos are like either actually, unless i listen to something on youtube.

films you've seen recently and would NOT recommend

His first short is brilliant. Still got that shock appeal but something a bit more socio realist in there Iirc. Im a fan of him, hes an amazing stylist (eg ETV), though hes not someone with much depth, just good at the sensory impact stuff. Im ok with that personally.

Films you've seen recently and would unreservedly recommend:

Faster pussycat kil kill. Incredible film. Cant believe i never saw it before. Def not what i thought a russ meyer film to be. Still, even despite its silly, campy bits, felt really fresh, taut and raw. Something really immediate about that kind of exploitation or underground cinema of that period.
