    what are you reading now?

that's too bad, i've been meaning to read this. the trick i think is to read as you would a novel, the general idea is more important than the detail. or find a different book. i read a book on gödel's thought called a logical journey, parts of which (especially logic, not my strong suit) were...

    scelsi's improvisation tapes

on topic now, there is an article about the ondiola and tape digitisation process in the fondazione magazine - in italian. it could be of interest to anyone who knows the language (i don't). magazines 1-24 magazine 19/20, 2008 (pdf)

    the Change of Heart Thread

i listened to this on the weekend and had an inmense change of heart, if not a conversion. i finally understood, and loved, the operatic form, something i didn't think possible. understanding in the sense of feeling with all my being, feeling for and with the characters, inmersed in the music...

    Electroswing.

not only is it wrong, it's demonic: a friend was into satanism, muzak, etc., and he loved it. also, dentists used it in waiting rooms.

    scelsi's improvisation tapes

good one. perhaps the aliens have it. one thing that does exist, but in ridiculous quantities, is the voyager golden record. i would love to have a facsimile, if not an original of this. someone fetch me a voyager probe, please. Quote: The record is constructed of gold-plated copper. The...

    what are you reading now?

beautiful paintings/illustrations in that post, i wasn't familiar with the artist. i'm in the middle of reading john lilly's center of the cyclone, wonderful stuff and fascinating to someone who is still trying to make sense of his experience with hallucinogens. next in line: hilaire belloc's...

    Electroswing.

not to sully the thread, but there was a classical music and beats thing called hooked on classics, and a hooked on swing offshoot that may give genre-mixers pause. also jive bunny and the mastermixers, but i don't want to degrade the thread further.

The Dissensus Poorly Titled Spiritual Jazz Thread

this one seems to be cd-only (and out of print), you'll probably not find the vinyl.

The Dissensus Poorly Titled Spiritual Jazz Thread

i love gania and gnawa generally, that must be incredible. something not mentioned yet is late seventies walt dickerson, the vibraphone in his hands has a shimmering, transcendent quality, as spiritual as one can imagine and (maybe?) a good fit for this thread. i recommend his beautiful...

    non-ipod mp3 players

although the xld mp3 compressor is very good, it's the same effort to dump to flacs, and much quicker in my experience. (admittedly with flac the tag editing can be a bit weird, but given that the thing doesn't read tags properly you may not need to bother with this!)

    Loving the alien

i have, thank god. for better or worse i've never owned a television (except for three months - coinciding with the wtc attacks), so i actively look for things rather than take them in passively. on topic now, i like the idea of infiltration and mimicry: john carpenter's remake of the thing...

    Loving the alien

yeah, the thing is i have cultural gaps the size of a continent, i've only seen one or two episodes and not the very earliest. same thing with the simpsons and so on. i live in a cave.

    Loving the alien

i find the real-life (providing you accept the idea) abduction-type aliens the more unsettling. it's sci-fi in a creepy and mundane sort of way, with us as objects of study with no say in the matter. plus they're telepathic. if you have to see something i would watch the documentary...

    what are you reading now?

ok, not properly reading (as in, not holding a physical book) but i'm enjoying hilaire belloc very much. very silly, amusing stuff available here: http://archive.org/details/badchildsbookofb00belluoft with illustrations!

    what are you reading now?

i think the point is that he's the more current and universal of the recent spanish-language writers, taking the latin american angle and mixing it up with american / european themes and so on; he was translated fairly late in his career, when he had honed his craft; and he died young, giving...
