Vocal Pop Music -- Do you listen to lyrics?

interesting, sure. But I don't really want to find myself singing along with them either! But I do occasionally, with hip hop at least. With reggae and grime, I at least have the escape hatch that I have to listen carefully to understand it all!

wow, thanks. I still don't have the first SY EP (I only go back to Confusion is Sex), but I'll look out for it. "Slightly less atonal" sounds more down my alley too. I like what I've heard and read about the more "mutant disco" end of things... blimey, there's just too much music!!!! I've also...

Vocal Pop Music -- Do you listen to lyrics?

yeah, the holy trio of homophobia/racism/misoginy probably lead to a good deal of lyric-ignoring for me too, in say dancehall and some hip hop.

Rock Music - let's be honest

yeah, obvs not a terrible rock-focussed group here. I will meekly say that I probably have listened to a good bit more straight up US indie than most here, although in terms of rock most of what I *now* listen to is slightly more off the dial (e.g. last three rock records I listened to: Can...

I'm just starting to dig through the whole ny no wave period (spurred by going further and further back with sonic youth). All three of those NY Noise compilations look super cool. Any recommendations on which I should pick up first??

oh my, how did I miss this thread?? Nomad, seeing how you like fashion so much, I can understand why the liberal arts college look must have KILLED you. ha! You went to Vassar or some such, right? The only ppl I know who went there wore mostly loose fitting flannel, although actually one guy...

Vocal Pop Music -- Do you listen to lyrics?

was just listening to your excellent blogariddims mix, soundslike, and when Frankie Teardrop came up it struck me as a pretty obvious example of a "song" where lyrics are key. It also scared the fuck out of me, as usual. Thanks a lot. ;) (thank god there's that soothing balm of the Cage afterward)

    In-ear headphones

looking into this now since I can't hear a damn thing w/ my iPod on the subway on a volume level that won't destroy the hair cells in my ears! The v-moda vibe looks pretty cool, although it's a little pricey (for me), and the sound isolation might not be tops...

    Great 2 Step?

hmmm..... I was listening to a different one. With this tracklist: United Vibes Dubstep History Mix Horsepower ? Classix Deluxe [Tempa] Artwork ? The Soul [White] DJ Abstract ? Identity Crisis [Vehicle] Bogeyman Vs Lombardo ? Disturbed DJ Abstract Touch [Tempa] Phuturistix ? 551 Blues [Locked...

Vocal Pop Music -- Do you listen to lyrics?

that's funny you'd mention that one. I luuurve that song, have listened to it 'nuff times, but I couldn't tell what the words were about. And as I said upthread, I sorta regret that. oh, and soundslike: I agree about Modest Mouse. I remember hearing "Trailer Trash", LOUD, on the soundsystem of...

    Reynolds' Pazz & Jopp essay

haven't read it yet but this article/convo on hipster metal might be interesting: http://www.decibelmagazine.com/features_detail.aspx?id=4912 it pretty much starts by saying that the much of the time when ppl use "hipster" it's kinda meaningless, and goes on to talk about subcultures, selling...

Vocal Pop Music -- Do you listen to lyrics?

I'm getting the sense (although I've always had it) that this board is particularly music (i.e. not lyric) centric. This really shouldn't be much of a surprise, given that dance musics seem to be pretty much the common denominator here. Anyone know any boards on the other side of the divide? I...

    Reynolds' Pazz & Jopp essay

Maybe I'm just totally thick, but it seems like what Guybrush was saying (at least in the last post) was simply that 1) there are others ways of describing hipsters, beyond their consumption patterns, and 2) he finds those ways more compelling, at least w/r/t hipsters. I take it that (1)...

Vocal Pop Music -- Do you listen to lyrics?

(as I recently mentioned in the Joanna Newsom thread), I don't tend to listen to the lyrics that much, but I sort of wish i did. I realize taht probably a lot of songs I like have crap lyrics, but I often feel kind of stupid when I enthuse about some song, and don't really know what it's about...
