What is good about Pop Music?

I'm dead wary of posting on this thread because I'm sure I'll end up as aforementioned popist straw man. And while I like pop plenty it's not my passion. But anyway, I don't think this is so hard to understand: My issue lies with the reception of Pop, with people taking that Pop tack...

Shouldn't that be "maven" in this context?

Why Shouldn't I Vote for George Galloway?

I honestly think there's something to be said for voting Tory if you really just want to wind up Blair - it might force a rethink on Labour policies, or even not voting at all. Voting for SWP type ish is a recipe for being ignored - Tony got to the position he's in by studiously ignoring the...

We've got a speaker's corner in Singapore, but you have to submit your speech for government approval before making it, so no-one does it.

    Walkman chic

Minidisc was essential to the development of carioca funk, according to DJ Marlboro. All the brazilians used to use it as it was a simple, cheap, good quality recording method that allowed producers to pass their stuff to DJs. Only stopped using it recently when the cost of cd burners dropped...

    Citizen Kane.

No question but it's the most "important" film ever. Pretty much all cinema history from '41 onwards would be different if it weren't for Kane. It invents most of the tricks that subsequent directors used.

    New Post-Punk Outweighs Old

    4) The Rapture - "House of Jealous Lovers" Can't really deny this one... They did fuck all else of note, but. 5) Out Hud - "Never let us speak of it again" Nice trippy dance-rock I reckon. Good for cycling. Ewan Pearson also likes it.

    Citizen Kane.

I met Jean Rollin once. He was a doddery old frenchman, and he explained that basically all his life he's had this erotic fixation on women in white, in graveyards, with blood on their white dresses, and that all his films are basically just ways to get as many of these shots in as possible...

    kompakt merchandise

No, cos those tend to say SIMPLE PLAN in big letters across the front and are therefore pretty unambiguous. The microhouse ones use 12 point type and thin little lines... It amuses me cos it's an example of the increasing subtlety of consumer culture - signifiers interpretable only by smaller...

    kompakt merchandise

Microhouse t-shirts always crack me up - they're always so desperately tasteful, like they're almost embarassed to brand the thing. I've got a Musik Krause one and I was wearing it out, and there's another guy there who I didn't know with a Mille Plateau one on, and we just looked at one...

Drugs and Music - what up with it these days?

Meth in a really horrible, degraded form, is hugely popular in Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam. It's often sold as little red pills with all sorts of shit in them, which people smoke. Malaysia and Thailand have plenty of strange shit bubbling away under the surface, I wouldn't be surprised to...

Drugs and Music - what up with it these days?

I think villalobos is probably into all sorts of exciting drugs that the rest of us can't get hold of. If I could party with anyone in the world it'd probably be him. You can just tell from the music that it'd be unbelievable. I reckon grime is coke+booze music. It's got that aggro...

    Honour in Music.

I love "honour" as a general concept - basically most of these unfashionable words are good: "judgement", "courage", "discipline". But are you using honour to mean "internally consistent value system" or something here? Because you could argue that MIA is honourable because she's harnessing...

    More MIA

Give or take the album, love the debate I have to say, I'm loving the whole debate around this record - it's like one of those thorny little problems in science that reveals whole worlds of information when its solved. To me the record is nice, but not stunning, but still a long way off being...

snipers I keep getting pipped on eBay auctions too, and someone told me recently it's cos there's this program people use called eSniper that is automatically programmed to swoop in and bid 30 seconds before the auction ends. Anybody know if that's true? But generally, fuck eBay. It tempts...

Can I ask a really retarded question - I have a cracked copy of Ableton and therefore no manual of any sort - how do you import clips? Do they have to be in AIFF format or can they be any digital audio?
