Descartes' Legacy: The Century of the Self

haha I was wondering how long it would take for that to get pointed out. FYI I'm not a libertarian or Austrian economist, although I have some libertarian tendencies and a couple positions in common with the Austrians. Oh I see what you were saying earlier re: pegging gold at $35. The US...

Descartes' Legacy: The Century of the Self

I think most people that actually understand the banking system already have a vested interest in it, if only on the fundamental level of social stability and their own financial security. as Henry Ford said, "It is well enough that people of the nation do not understand our banking and...

Descartes' Legacy: The Century of the Self

As Tartarsky pointed out, this is a matter of intense debate. Alan Greenspan was a firm proponent of the gold standard, before his famous defection to the Fed and betrayal of the Objectivists (ardent gold supporters). The position of the economists allied with the Federal Reserve (Friedman...

Descartes' Legacy: The Century of the Self

thanks for the videos, hmlt. I was totally unaware of Adam Curtis. I found them immensley interesting. A few points TPON - re: the Straussians. Having watched the film I would say that the Straussians are given a completely fair assessment. Century of the Self & The Trap I really liked...

Descartes' Legacy: The Century of the Self

In the course I am thinking of we read parts of The History of Political Philosophy. The thing is, you know that you are asking an impossible task of me. I cannot give textual evidence for Strauss's true beliefs because they are communicated esoterically, and are only properly understood by...

Descartes' Legacy: The Century of the Self

Not off the top of my head, but I have read Strauss and been taught by several well-known Straussians. I think I gave a pretty fair assessment of the man's views. I can look it up if you really want, but I'd rather not bother.

Descartes' Legacy: The Century of the Self

yeah, all I'm saying is that (whether or not Wolfowitz took it to heart) Strauss openly advocated philosophical indoctrination within the academia as a means of exerting political power and shaping public policy outside of the academia. You're right, it's not a conspiracy if he openly teaches...

Descartes' Legacy: The Century of the Self

Your post was pretty reasonable, except for this line of reasoning (his aim was philosophical, not political). Strauss conceived of himself and philosophers in general as having an active political role in society, and favoured an extremely politicized academia. He was quite overt about it.

    Dubstep is revolting

this is what I don't understand: As a (non-subscription based) station, rinse are not selling the radio stream to the public in the first place. They are selling ad space (and dj slots) that are only made more valuable by having them archived and sent out to a larger audience. Why in the world...

    Can you smell impeachment?

impeachment is the process of trying a president for a criminal offence. congress votes to lay charges, then the senate votes on which charges to convict on. impeached is another word for "charged", but it specific to the president and has a special procedure. I think there is a common...

    Can you smell impeachment?

Clinton wasn't almost impeached, he was completely impeached.. and he wasn't impeached for having an affair in the Oval office. really, do yourself a favour and spend 5 minutes reading up on what impeachment actually is. I think you are the only person who views impeachment as an all-purpose...

    Can you smell impeachment?

It's becoming clear that you don't even know what impeachment is. You can't be, and no one ever has been, impeached for international war crimes. It is legally impossible. What part of that don't you understand? Your example of "joined up reasoning" is an oxymoron, sir.

    Can you smell impeachment?

thread title: "Can you smell impeachment?" QUOTE=hundredmillionlifetimes;80313] - as if these crimes were simply an internal, domestic US issue. Under international law, Bush and Blair and their cabals of eager lapdogs should be heading, along with Bin Laden, to the Hague court, as with other...

    Can you smell impeachment?

Of course he did, you retard. Are you aware of anything going on in North America? They deliberated for days on whether it was possible that Scooter Libby "forgot" telling almost 10 people about Valerie Plame. They unanimously concluded that he lied on purpose. It is a difficult charge to...

    Can you smell impeachment?

Of course it was highly politicized, it was a criminal scandal in the White House. No sane person can doubt that he is guilty, so I don't see what you are getting at. of course

    Can you smell impeachment?

Personally I would like to see him impeached for incompetence, but sadly that's not a felony. He should go down for the CIA leak though. Any way you look at it, it was a major crime that fully deserves impeachment. So while I have many other reasons for wanting to see him impeached, they are...

    Can you smell impeachment?

personally I think they should go after Cheney. He calls the shots anyways, and he's incriminated up to his neck in the Scooter Libby case. Even the jurors were asking when the other charges against Cheney and co. would be coming. I have a feeling he will die (perhaps on purspose) before ever...
