    Boys or Girls?

am female, but don't feel any particular need to advertise it- it usually transpires soon enough anyway. (or when you start "remembering" the regulars etc.) for some reason i agree with the "male" feel of these boards, might just be the old "dark and edgy" background style, though... ;)

    Sci-Fi novels

...i tried very hard to find this one, but it seems to be only available in Portugese? my local librarian (who has to be the most hardcore SF geek i've ever enountered) had never heard of it either! :(

Films you've seen recently and would unreservedly recommend:

a friend of mine kept waxing lyrical about a Herzog (short?) film called "The Green Ants", or something similar...But I've never found anything even *resembling* that title... ...does anyone know what film I'm on about?

    The Hater's Thread

...absolutely no idea! BTW, just remembered my pet hate of the century: that smug bastard, Bono...

    The Hater's Thread

for the record, i hate most music mentioned in this thread. all the mass-produced, dumbed down, "lowest common denominator"/top40 conveyor belt generic shite... it sucks being a snob, though... i feel a bit guilty, because looking down on some (admittedly awful) music often leads to...

    The Hater's Thread

uh- oh...anyone remember that *terrible* tune that crawled the top40 lists in the early 90's, think crap joke-dance with oldman "scat" widdly-widdly wee type vocals...think it was "scatman john"? grr...erm, whatever... (argh- now once i've remembered it, it won't go away! oh, the irony...)

Music that's popular in the Middle East

there's a Lebanese(?) singer called Fairuz who's done some great recordings, her voice seems to be everywhere down there, she's got a v. lush, beautifully rich voice, with those irresistible classical arabesque voice phrasings which must take ages to learn... we drove all the way...

Gnostics or anyone interested in Gnosticism

btw, in what way does the new/recent translation of the Nag Hammadi texts differ from the "old" version(s)?

    House of Leaves

not much to do with the original issue whatsoever, but does anyone remember, some years ago, some sort of novelty "re-structured version" of a (fake or real) victorian "novel"? (i can't remember what it was called, something starting with an h?)

questions you are dying to ask but are too scared to b/c of music nerd cred?

questions you are dying to ask but are too scared to b/c of music nerd cred?

sorry, didn't post that up to show off or anyfink! :o i got them at a time where people were focusing on "new" gear and so those beauties weren't popular at all- found hidden and unloved in the dusty discount corner...long before the current "retro" nostalgia pushed prices into ridiculous...

    House of Leaves

iirc some of the Beats explored typography in a similar way, mostly in poetry and not prose, though. ...also didn't the (french) Dadaists experiment with this? ...some of the early poems i've read by the Russian Futurist poet Mayakovsky (sp?) experiment with letters in a Konstruktivist style.

questions you are dying to ask but are too scared to b/c of music nerd cred?

...what's the best way to "fatten up" a cold digital synth sound and give it more analogue warmth? ...people have been muttering something in their beards about "run it through some guitar effects boxes or summat, love"... but i'm a non-techie girly and i really don't know how to do that- what...

    Ambient suggestions

ah, hehe- guess it was just that i wouldn't naturally include Can in any "ambient" context- their work is a bit too upbeat and motorik to fall asleep too... but yeah, Future Days is one of their mellowest and most spacious/atmospheric efforts- and Czukay's use of shortwave radio static as a...

    Ambient suggestions

A classic slice of "ambient" is Global Communication: 76:14 (essential record imo, and just reissued on cd w/extra bonus tracks) if you're not afraid of avant-classical, Steve Reich: Music For 18 Musicians (the original recording) - is lovely... the Necks make loooong pieces of extremely...
