I think hardvapor was a reaction to some in the scene's dislike for what vaporwave was becoming, so they declared it dead. But in the chronology of vaporwave as a musical genre it was nearly always fairly fractured, quickly separating into classic, hypnagogic drift, vaportrap, future funk etc...

Is coolness a constant? All those private press albums that get sweated now, but were never really 'cool' enough to make at the time of their original release. The whole new age genre. Wouldn't a fair amount of great music be lost?

It's kinda telling that the end point for the internet side of this stuff seems to be Fashwave. We've come so far.

Yeah, I'm probably missing the point. Hypnagogic & hauntology seem like better labels to discuss, although they're rather large umbrellas. I guess that's inevitable when talking about music defined by a shared approach and why I find the discussion a little wooly as a result.

Was chillwave ever actually a thing? I remember there was indie music with somewhat similar vibe around the end of the 00s and journos/blogers trying to make it a thing, but it never really took hold & soon enough another group of music journalists were saying it was never a thing anyway...

Coldcut JDJ mix '70 Minutes Of Madness' was pretty seminal to my young mind's developing musical tastes. One Blood over The Truper - Street Beats Vol 2 still sounds amazing, although a lot of the rest of it has been forgotten about tbh.
