i doubt that much 2-step rhythm is Re-Cycle'd from other music. The rhythmic feel of the genre is decidedly non-human.

Same here, i've been trying to get my tunes as funky as my fav 2-step garage for a while, but not quite getting it. It's not just the drum programming, every note that one sings/plays is also a rhythmic event, and is a key part of the rhythm, contributing to funkyness.

    favorite musical moments in film.

I love the use of music in the very last scene of Claire Dennis' Beau Travail. The choice of music suggests a complete reinterpretation of the film. You can find it on youTube, but if you have not seen this phantastic movie and plan to, i recommend not spoiling your enjoyment by knowing the...

    Villalobos Fabric 36- Thoughts?

no idea, please tell me. i love grand generalisations, and tend to spot trends only if they are over. every time i end up at minimal kind of events here in london, everybody is italian/spanish/russian... my berlin friends tell me that the situation is similar there.

    Occupying the Moral High Ground

Every society has lots of simmering tensions, poor vs rich being the most persistent. In fact the point of politics is to domesticate and defuse those. Nothing special about Iraq here, that would warant saying that after Saddam's death ethnic unrest of the scale we are seeing now would have been...

No, you understand syncopations well. I just have a non-standard take on the issue. Iand i'm not expressing myself well -- it's a highly technical issue. think what is really going on musically is that there are several rhythms going on. The standard understanding says: normally weak beats are...

    Occupying the Moral High Ground

That's my point. If Saddam had died, assuming no Iraq II war, then given that admission above, you should expect the same in iraq: nothing changes - not the balance of power and not the ruling elite.

    Occupying the Moral High Ground

From wikipedia (emphasis mine). The Soviet Union and her satellites were the main suppliers of arms to Iraq following the 1972 signing of the Soviet-Iraqi Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation. France was another important supplier of weapons to Iraq during the 1970s. The United States, the...

    Occupying the Moral High Ground

I didnt say that the US created the Sunni/Shia split. I presume that the US aggravated the situation. I don't think that Saddam was perceived as a Sunni autocrat. More as a run of the-mill-dictator. I have never heard a good explanation for the post-invasion ethnicisation in iraq. I'm open to...

The USSR also had an overriding strategic interest of opposing the US. and Iran was oppsing the US ... my enemy's enemy ... again

Wot? Funky drummer is a crazy rhythm with lots of shares, ghosted or otherwise, almost nothing emphasis the downbeat. I don't remember it off the top of my head, and it's too complicated for me to work it out on the fly by listening, but i have programmed it (don't have my XS key at work sorry)...

Contrary to what's been said upthread, it's not always possible to say what's the 1. Especially in electronic dance music. A lot of producers play with this, to fool you into locking onto one groove, and then continuing with another. Typically you have a full on A section, then an A' section...

    Occupying the Moral High Ground

It is my understanding that these tensions didn't really exist as a significant force before the ethnic divide-and-conquer post invasion. after all, there aren't violent Sunni/Shia clashes in neighbouring countries every time a leader changes. I admit that there is a possibility of post-saddam...

A sure, the SU also supported SH. In fact during the cold war, loads of 3rd world dictators played the two off against each other very successfully. I agree, the evidence is scant. The reason why i'm tentatively taking this as the most likely cause of events is that it fits so well with US...

    Occupying the Moral High Ground

I don't think the invasion took place because of Saddam, a former US buddy. I think the reason was an ill-conveived mix of a desire to "Show the Arab who's boss", i.e. to reassert US dominance of the region which had received blow through the WTC attacks, and a messianic and naive and...

    Occupying the Moral High Ground

I cannot. Neither can you. I have seen various wildly variant figures with a strong correlation to the political position of whoever quotes them. The iraqis of my personal acquaintance, all of which left because of saddam, tell me that violence is worse now than it used to be.

    Occupying the Moral High Ground

That's wishful thinking on your part. There is no credible estimate for the numbers of deaths in the NC famine, estimates i have seem range from 100000 to several millions. It's pointless to speculate about it, especially since it's completely unrelated to the discussion. Nobody here is in...

    Occupying the Moral High Ground

I subtract these figures. I have no sympathy for Saddam. As far as I can see, these figures would be significantly lower. I have no problems with the sanctions. As far as I am aware, Saddam was a US ally. In particular, I assume that the Iran-Iraq war was supported by the US, maybe even...
