Second Summer of Love goes Radio 2

Beyond all this it unavoidably feels like this is an attempt to create an "official version"...to own or even transmute a piece of recent history that was supposedly genuinely democratic. elements of this culture are still judged to be more than problematic in law so it's peculiar to see its...

Jay-Z is killing off Glastonbury festival

I thought it was meant to be an inclusive gesture, "I embrace your culture"... hip hop by its nature can co opt almost anything. Still- pretty ropey set really, but kinda funny. seemed to win the crowd over.

Second Summer of Love goes Radio 2

The most comfortable and establishment piece of rave nostalgia yet. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, seeing as you have to been pushing forty to have been "there" in 1988- but I am anyway. Somehow i never imagined cosy reminiscences of coming up on a rhubarb and custard in some field off the...

    autotune. please don't

That's the best kind! ;) Still i think the android quality has an emotionally distancing effect. it makes these records impossible to sing along with for one thing. though i've heard people trying.

    Can They Paint Or Not?

I lived with someone who was a fantastic technical draughtsman and painter- really enviably good, but he had little visual imagination. he could only really do life drawing. his talent needed some encouragement, even moulding. after 6 months of artschool he was doing all this shit with mince in...

    autotune. please don't

there's a blankness to it- it allows all kinds of musical embellishments of the vocal line, but they aren't expressive. and glamour is all about "blank"...

    autotune. please don't

Sure...I had noticed! Today's vocoder i guess. Adds a nice robot/human contrast for the delivery of "sexy" lyrics etc...plus in this case the plugin is free for trial and with DIY videos all over youtube it allows smaller producers to imitate the big boys. I'm sure they'll get bored of it soon...

    autotune. please don't

Well- it's a handy way to disguise a poor vocalist for a start. The median standard of what is considered an acceptable vocal performance has changed in the age of software correction.

    Detroit - the myth

Detroit's produced some of the best house music ever made in the last 10+ years. The Three Chairs axis- Theo Parrish, Omar S, Rick Wilhite, Marcellus Pittman, KDJ etc etc. Pretty much all the FXHE and sound signature 12"s are great, and its not a sound you find elsewhere. Plus there have been...

    creel pone & that

IMO the best book on the history of c20 experimental music is Morphogenesis memeber Roger Sutherland 's "New Perspectives in Music". Begins with Russolo, Webern and moves through Cage to live electronics, improvisation etc. Really an excellent book, inclusive, very clearly structured and...

Ennio Morricone io box DISC 3

I never said or suggested it was his earliest work. Nonetheless...he made some avant garde music. Not a great deal...but some. Therefore "experimentation in this setting" does make some sense. That's all. No one's barking up a non existent tree, to go along with your fruit metaphor.

Ennio Morricone io box DISC 3

? have you actually read this thread? Morricone did produce some experimental music early in his career, and that is what is under discussion, though as I've said I'm no expert. GINC was an avowedly experimental group, they hold a historical place alongside the Scratch Orchestra, Musica...

    Buying records

For sure- what i meant was the air of marginality and mystery long cultivated by these artists has been somewhat dispelled by their new found accessibility via the internet, willingness to play live and so forth. I would have thought it undermined the "esoteric" nature of their product, which...

    Buying records

This is very true-though largely it's so the major players can make a living out of their music. they know that their audience is relatively small but quite fanatical...a hangover from when NWW et al records WERE relatively hard to obtain. They're prepared to exploit that audience pretty...
