    The God / Dawkins Delusion

yeah I think he was just trying to get me worked up actually, in which he succeeded for a little while until I was satisfied that's what he was doing.

    The God / Dawkins Delusion

yes it makes perfect sense. clearly created objects have a different kind of purpose than natural ones (you can see my religious noninclinations in this phrasing). this is really just a question of intentionality, don't you think? when we think about purposes we think `what object/function x is...

    The God / Dawkins Delusion

one might argue that, at least on one understanding, some why questions are answerable by science: e.g. evolutionary biology seems to have something to say about why certain species have certain behaviors: just because they are adaptive. (as formalized in say maynard smith's game-theoretic work)...

    Nature With An Empathetic Face

Did I misunderstand or was the point of this article that monkeys/apes exhibit cooperative behavior, and so we should expect humans to do so too? I don't see that this is really a basis for morality. Does being moral equate to following some genetically programmed behaviorial template?

    "Scooter" Libby

Exactly. The calculation must be: How could things get any worse? The American public has given up on me/us anyway, so now we might as well just do whatever we like.

    Car bombs in London

but this doesn't have anything to do with the war, does it? at least not in the sense that the war is doing anything to stop terrorism. why would it make people support the war???

    Postmodernity

can I ask a naive question as a non-initiate? what is all this theory meant to do? I can understand e.g. analytic philosophy: it is trying (at least some of it) to say what certain things mean, or what we do with them. this is a relatively straightforward objective and one that would surely seem...

    Movado

Yes completely! very into this right now. amazing grace is ... amazing. he is certainly best at the gun talk thing, but the style is quite original I feel. I like the purity of his voice coupled with nihilistic lyrics, and also his weird sense of (non)melody. punchy.

    Why Dissensus?

I also use beamer. I don't think it is much different from pp in the end but the result may be different b/c it doesn't come with presets (or maybe I am just too ignorant a user?). Is anyone but me puzzled about the relation between this content and the thread title?

Meaning, of course, inconvenient for the boycotters, not the boycotted.

    Boycotting Zionism

Well, by all reports F's work is not of a quality that would call for getting rid of him. Of course DePaul has no obligation to keep him on, but, as I understand the situation, they have no reason (in terms of their policies) not to. (Or was there some policy I missed?) At any rate, I'm not...
