    When Lordi roamed the Earth

already on youtube - http://www.youtube.com/results?tag=lordi kicked me back into full Fangoria/Cinefantastique mode - possibly more of an avid Troma fan convention than Star Trek though?

Eno is back with Roxy Music

Well, well. The paper of gliberal slipper-wearing potsmoking dads sometimes come up with the goods, the Grauniad on Friday:

    New Labour 'Target Culture'

Target culture - everything is measured by targets. so you get school league tables, targets on hospital queues, on crime, on the "value" of public services, how profitable each post office or other semi-public instance is, on expelling a percentage of asylum seekers etc. The idea is to create...

    'Gateway' bands

Alice Cooper and Redbone for getting me into music in early adolescence . And for the theatrical/dressing up aspect in rock - ie Roxy Music, Steve Harley, Split Enz, Szajner, Cramps, Wayne County etc Danish band Gasolin' as my first ever proper gig (Scandinavia's Thin Lizzy) Sex Pistols and The...

    Hauntology

I don't own it any more - but isn't there a track on "Neu 2" where someone is rowing a boat on a lake while talking? That track still haunts me (as does selling the vinyl). Listening to ie The Caretaker's "We’ll All Go Riding on a Rainbow" I would say that hauntology is also about place - a...

    hauntomix - June 5th 2005

Hadn't heard of the term "hauntology" when I created the mix (in June 2005), but in retrospect I think it fits perfectly - WWII air-raid alarms, footsteps, crackles, sounds of rusting boats and heavy breathing (?) - under almost beatless electronic music; an overall eerie-cozy atmosphere. 15...

The wet Euro-arse fretless slap bass thread

It is a new release. From what I understand she has gone totally independent. That CD cover seems to be hand glued and all. Just one of these things - you go through your collection and think "is she still around"? I am glad she is. Samples from 31:31 here "X Dreams" was actually what lead...

The wet Euro-arse fretless slap bass thread

fekk knows - but with Annette Peacock it's not too bad. It's a sound that quickly dated and still sound dated. And that's why I was surprised and taken back by APs new album - I thought no one was going to use that sound again - it's like seeing someone wearing a Miami Vice suit or legwarmers.

The wet Euro-arse fretless slap bass thread

to paraphrase Buick6 deserves a sidethread. I guess it was around before the 80s - but it really came to its own (?) with that guy Pino Palladino in his work with Paul Young and Gary Numan. Others: Fashion - "Fabrique" Annabel Lamb - "Once Bitten" Level 42 - ugh and it's still around - got...

Cubillas of Peru takes a couple of free kicks (70s football)

Here's some more Diego, I like the kicking he does 2:50 into this video and here's the great man set to the Arctic Monkeys . This is my fav though, Maradona in Napoli - deflated goalies, parades in the streets, it must have been magic to have been around. And let me slip in a Tony Yeboah...

Has the heat gone off illegally downloading music?

Those podcasting terms are not too bad actually (in terms of show content), as an occational podcaster (only free legal MP3s) I read through them. The killer is the price though - if you have a bit of success (or get a Chinese fanbase) you are going to get thousands of downloads for each...

The great 80's brit synthpop thread

I'll admit to buying their first album. My excuse is that I got in on sale with loads of other stuff, the cover was sort of different and I might have thought it was related to 23 Skidoo (ok that's a thin one) - but we have to stop right here and just say NO - LEVEL 42 - THAT REALLY IS THE...

Why are there no good UK metal/hard rock bands anymore..

I like Conga (or C0nga with a zero?) - stupid name, but good trad heavy. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=30624640 and http://www.gonga.co.uk/seehere.html (strato-fortress was the tune that got me on to them - like status quo ca 1973).

Ahh - what about Fashiøn (as they named themselves) and their "Fabrique" album with the single "Love Shadow". Stonking bass on that one.
